Bennington Potters David Gil #1541 Pig Bank
Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont. It is from the 1955-1960 period. Bennington by Gil started in 1948 . They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters. They made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores but this is an earlier more studio inspired piece. Marked #1541 this is a stylized pig in a highly abstract style. David Gil designed a series of animal banks, including a hippo, an owl and a lion. This was called Penurious Pig! Like Glidden Parker in the early 1940s, Gil used various animal motifs often on his ware, though most are two dimensional representations. This fun and funky pig stands 4 1/2 inches tall to the top of its back x 8 inches long. The main portion of the bank is unglazed with some impressed asterisks covering the pig's body. The asterisks are in brown, one of four colors possible. It has the original red plastic cork to seal the opening on the bottom. It is signed Bennington Potters Bennington VT which places it in the 1962-1968 time period. This pig back was shown in a 1967-68 catalogue along with the other nine shapes. This bank is in excellent condition with no damage. I have priced this Penurious Pig bank very fairly. It would make a stunning sculptural piece on a McCobb or Eames era credenza or coffee table. David Gil was featured in the publication Vermont Life in its Winter 1961 issue. In an eight page spread with one full color image and 13 black and white images, there is a full history of the founding of the pottery along with great visual references of the ware being made at that time. One can see the iconic designs of Yusuke Aida, especially the double trigger mug and coffeepot along with other fascinating items. A great reference!

Effanbee Winter Four Seasons 15 In. Doll, 1981
This doll is the Effanbee 1981-82 15 In. vinyl Winter doll from the Four Seasons Collection. She has long straight blonde rooted hair with bangs, moving blue eyes, and freckles on her face. She is wearing a pleated red, green, and yellow plaid skirt, a white fleece-like jacket with buttons, a matching white fleece hat, and white fleece scarf, red stockings, and white vinyl boots. I have seen this face on a doll called Chipper from that period. She is in outstanding condition and is still strapped in her original box which has the number 3534 stamped on the bottom. Her Winter outfit is also perfect for either a school girl or Christmas display. The window covering is cracked on one end, but the doll has beautiful coloring and is in crisp like-new condition with her original tag, which shows that she was made in the U.S.A. when the company was in New York, New York. June 1861-vice President H. Hamlin: Telegram Re Meeting With Colonizationist D. W. Lord
Two June 14, 1861 telegrams from recently inaugurated Vice President Hannibal Hamlin (one is signed by Hamlin) regarding a meeting with U. S. shipping magnate and colonizationist (A supporter of the settlement of Liberia as an African American colony.) Daniel Walker Lord. The American Telegraph Co. documents advise: Received at Kennebunk (Me.) 6/4/1861 by telegraph from Boston to D. W. Lord I will be at U. S. Hotel, Portland this evening H. Hamlin Received at Portland (Me.) 6/14/1861 by telegraph from Bangor to D. W. Lord Will see you in Bangor on arrival of cars H. Hamlin The personal connection between the Kennebunk, Maine shipping baron and the Bangor, Maine politician becomes an interesting subject of historical speculation as one considers the just post inauguration meetings between Hamlin as Abraham Lincoln's first term Vice President and the wealthy and influential benefactor of the American Colonization Society. (Some historians hold that the ACS was a racist society bent on colonizing contraband and emancipated slaves while others, who recognize the support of such contemporaries Abraham Lincoln himself, hold that, while misguided by modern standards, supporters on the colonization Liberia were men of compassion and vision. When considering the broader potential it seems more likely that the meeting of the pair held far less potential for historical controversy than colonization of the Blacks. Both were native Mainers who's wealth and influence likely carries them in the same social circles. We know for example that Lord was personally acquainted with Lincoln Cabinet member William Pitt Fessenden of Maine as well as other Washington leaders. In introducing Lord to President Lincoln one Congressman wrote Lincoln that any suggestions which Mr. Lord might make would be worthy of consideration . It was in the early 1860s that D. W. Lord would construct two fine commercial ships which he named the Hamlin and Lincoln. Buy with confidence!
