ANTIQUE PAIR OF SIGNED JAPANESE SATSUMA VASES WITH MORIAGE This is a beautiful pair of antique Satsuma vases. I am not an expert but I have been told that based on the mark they date to the mid to late 1800's. The vases are considered to be identical, although one is slightly taller, and only one is signed. There are two scenes on the vases and handles with tassels hanging from them. One scene appears to be two Samurai warriors dressed in armor and head gear and holding swords with a young child looking on or helping them. The other is two scholars or sages sitting and talking and again there is a child in attendance. The pictures on the two vases seem identical but upon close inspection you will notice very subtle differences since they are hand painted and decorated. The vases have very, very heavy gold, white and black moriage (raised enameling). The moriage is also very intricate. My pictures tend to wash out the coloring on the vases, but there is dark blue, light blue, yellow, rust, peach, turquoise blue, brown, black and grey. The vases measure 11-1/2 and 11-3/4 inches tall. The only problem I have been able to find is some wear to the gold on the side handles and tassels.
