VICTOR RIESEL - TLS OCT 8 1965 Riesel discusses travel arrangements for a speech to be given at a ladies club in Philadelphia.

Victor Riesel was an infamous labor columnist known for exposing organized crime and corruption in labor unions.

In 1956, Abraham Telvi, a small time hood operating in New York City was hired by Luchese Family Capo Johnny Dio to throw acid in the face of Riesel, who, at the time, was investigating labor racketeering in the garment district in which Dio was a major power. The attack was carried out in the early morning hours of April 5, just after Riesel left Lindy's restaurant in midtown Manhattan. The acid thrown by Telvi blinded Riesel but he continued to write his column until he retired in 1990. Telvi was quickly removed from scene, and was found shot to death on Mulberry Street in Manhattan on July 28,1956. He was 21 years old.

DREW PEARSON - TLS APR 12 1960 Pearson expresses sentiment for support of his views.

Drew Pearson (1897-1969) was Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun. Three years later he joined the Scripps-Howard syndicate, United Features. His Merry-Go-Round column was published in newspapers all over the United States.

Pearson was a strong supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal program. He also upset more conservative editors when he advocated United States involvement in the struggle against fascism in Europe. Pearson's articles were often censored and so in 1941 he switched to the more liberal The Washington Post.

During the Second World War Pearson became a radio broadcaster. He soon became one of America's most popular radio personalities. After the war he was an enthusiastic supporter of the United Nations and helped to organize the Friendship Train project in 1947. The train travelled coast-to-coast collecting gifts of food for those people in Europe still suffering from the consequences of the war.

In 1949 Pearson criticised the Secretary of Defence, James Forrestal, for his conservative views on foreign policy. Pearson also suggested that Forrestal was guilty of corruption. Pearson was blamed when Forrestal committed suicide on 22nd May 1949.

In the early 1950s Pearson was one of the few journalists to stand up against Joe McCarthy. Along with George Seldes, I. F. Stone, Walter Lippmann, Jack Anderson and Herb Block Pearson played an important role in McCarthy's downfall.
