THE LOS ANGELES STAR 1851-1864 WILLIAM B. RICE Olive cloth boards with gilt title, slight edgewear and mild toning to dust jacket which p;rotetected by mylar. History of the earliest known California newspapers (weekly) which was printed half in Spanish and half in English. When the Civil War began in 1861, the editor of the Star was arrested for treason due to his criticism of the government and the paper was banned from the mails. The paper ceased operations in 1864 only to begin anew a few years later, teetering back and forth with financial problems before its ultimate collapse.
