Exocet Fixed on Target - For us the loss of Sheffield was the equivalent of the loss of General Belgrano for the Argentines remarked Admiral John Sandy Woodward. It focused in our minds that this was a real war-that people were getting killed.

Armistice Enforced by Cannon - Ordered to stay out of Navarino Bay by the Turks, Vice Adm. Sir Edward Codrington replied: I am come not to receive orders, but to give them; and if any shot be fired at the allied fleet, the Turkish fleet shall be destroyed.

Goal With a Price to be Paid - General Hunter Liggett, commander of the U.S. Army's I Corps, described the Argonne Forest as a natural fortress, beside which the Wilderness in which Grant and Lee fought was a park.

King's Horse Tested - Driven from London by the Parliamentarians, King Charles I placed command of his loyal cavalry in the hands of his nephew, Prince Rupert-a 22 year-old dandy with a first-rate military mind.

Invasion Attempt Repeated - The Mongols had driven the Japanese back into the ancient fortress of Muzuki, but the had nearly expended all of their arrows in the process. And now their Korean sea captains were warning of a possible storm that evening.

Contents include:

One Man's Own War - Every soldier has his own story, some eventful, some not...here is the story of one GI and his adventures great and small, from Utah Beach to the Huergen Forest.

Perfectly Terrible Encounter - In 1864, the forts surrounding Richmond as a protective collar could be penetrated by forces moving with all speed, U.S. Grant calculated. His men did quickly capture Fort Harrison...but then came a series of blunders.

Dual Disaster at Sea - It was Britain's Empire Day as HMS Hood closed upon the German Bismark. In 21 minutes, one ship would be sunk, the other on its way to similar fare.

Imperial Interest Protected - The press and even Sir Uarnet Wolsely's own staff were duped into believing the British landing in Egypt in 1882 would be at Aboukir Bay. Wolsely had another idea entirely.

Violent Summit Encounter - Among the U.S. mountaineers deployed to Italy was a German native well-used to the mountaineering tradition. In Italy, U.S. mountain troops would meet their far more experienced German counterparts.

Stressed to Breaking Point - At Blenheim, John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, counted upon his enmy to rush reinforcements to the wings and leave the center open to his main attack. His commanders at either wing soon became heavily involved, the outcome uncertain.

Red Lion Lament - Espying Robert the Bruce scouting the area between opposing forces, Sir Humphrey de Bohun could not resist the opportunity. Couching his lance, the English knight rode full-tilt to engage the Scottish king in single combat.

Nasty Little Fight - The Canadians bombarded the rebellious Indian village with 7-pounder cannon and a Gatling gun, but to no avail. Advancing under their trajectories through draws and ravines, Fineday and his braves prepared to assault the cumbersome guns.

Duel of French Chessmasters - It had taken Marechal Turenne's French cavaly and English allies four hours to dislodge the Spanish from their key position in the Dunes. But now, as he had anticipated, the tide was coming in, and the Spanish right flank began to fold.

Best Case Scenario Exceeded - At 1 o'clock on the morning of September 12, 1918, an artillery barrage loudly heralded the opening of the St. Mihiel offensive. After 17 months of effort, an American army was fighting under its own flag declared General John J. Pershing.

Three-War Marine - After enduring a torpedo attack off Truk, being strafed on Okinawa and surviving a rocket attack in Korea, Charles Gaither was ready to retire from the Marine Corp in 1965. But he still had 13 months to go-and he was going to Vietnam.
