1961 HANNA BARBERA FLINTSTONES ASHTRAY
BARNEY WITH BOWLING BALL
ATTRIBUTED TO AMERICAN BISQUE POTTERIES
This high quality, heavy ceramic ashtray was made in 1961, to promote the first season of the Flintstones. This piece, although not marked with the American Bisque logo, has been attributed to American Bisque. It certainly appears to be a "go-with" to the highly sought after American Bisque Flintstones cookie jars.
In the 1994 American Bisque Collector's Guide by Jane Giacomini, (where the book value on this ashtray is $100-$110) it states the following:
"When we first laid eyes and hands on the Flintstone ashtrays, the American Bisque homing device in our heads went off. Clearly marked c. Hanna Barbera Productions 1961, Arrow Houseware Products, Inc., Chicago, Ill. USA, we were disappointed. After some thought and a little digging, we realized the Arrow Houseware Products was not a pottery company but a distributor. We asked sales representative Bill Schneider, Sr. if he could verify the manufacture of these ashtrays and he told us that he had in fact seen them before and that it was American Bisque Vice President/General Manager, Mike O'Brien who had shown them to him. While not proof positive, we believe if Mr. O'Brien had them in his possession they were from his pottery."
The ashtray is in beautiful condition, with the tiniest bit of crazing, and no chips, cracks, or damage. It is large, measuring approx. 8" x 5 1/4", and as mentioned before, it is quite heavy and well made. It has been in my private collection for a while now, and it's very hard to part with this piece, but I'm forced to sell it - I'm hoping it will go to someone who will appreciate it as much as I have. Shipping is an additional $6.00 within the continental U.S.
