Hand Painted Bird Porcelain Chocolate Pot This beautiful Nippon style porcelain chocolate pot is marked: Hand Painted/Made in Japan under the Arch in Green. This piece was probably made just at the time the USA made Japan take the word Nippon off their wares in the 1920s. Nippon, Japanese hand painted porcelain was made for export between 1891 and 1921. In 1891 when the McKinley tariff act proclaimed that all items of foreign manufacture be stamped with their country of origin, Japan chose to use Nippon. In 1921, the United States decided the word Nippon no longer was acceptable and required all Japanese wares to be marked Japan, ending the Nippon Era. This piece has the green mark, according to Kovels New Dictionary of Marks, page 125-D of TORll, Japan 1895-1921, except Made in Japan is where Nippon used to be. The majority of the marks are found in 3 different colors: green, blue, or magenta. Colors indicate the quality of porcelain used: green for first grade porcelain, blue for second grade, and magenta for third grade. You can see by the pictures this is a high quality porcelain cocoa pot and the design of a red breasted blue bird in a tree is exquisitely done, on the front and the design on the back as well, with the fruit banding around the top of the pot and the lid to match. In very good + condition it measures 9 inches tall, 6 1/4 inches spout to handle, and 5 1/8 inches across the base. A definite addition to any Cocoa Pot, Chocolate Pot or Japan Porcelain Collection.
