Yellowware Rockingham lrg Cuspidor w profiles & scrolls
An unusual cuspidor or spittoon, with a mottled complex brown & yellow glaze over a yellow base. Not marked, but possibly of English origin. This is not my area of big knowledge, but I was taken by both the color & the design, which consists of 2 repeats of a hatted man’s profile within a beaded oval, surrounded by ornate scrolls. He looks to be a representation of a person from very early times, as in DaVinci. I believe that this is "yellow ware," possibly going back to around 1849-90 (found conflicting dates)...perhaps even earlier?? Measures 8 1/8" wide x 4 ˝" tall. The exit hole is slightly off square, appearing to be hand cut. There is a chip on one edge. There is a significant crack across the middle top area with some loss of glaze (photo shows some of the area). No cracks on the sides or base, although the base shows lots of crazing. Buyer to pay for shipping by USPS Priority with Delivery Confirmation, 7 lbs. from 06068. #200
