| Coin Glass has a wonderful history. Originally made by Central Glass & Hobbs Cos. under the US Glass consortium in 1892, the US government quickly halted production of this pattern because it was illegal to use facsimiles of real coins. The original coin glass had silver dollars, dimes and other real coins made to scale, including dates! US Glass was forced to discontinue production, but salvaged their molds by changing the coins to foreign coins and called the pattern Columbian Coin. The 2 pieces offered here are Fostoria’s 1958 version of Coin Glass, OMN no. 1372 Coin Glass Pattern. Both pieces show the reverse of a coin with an eagle & a date, alternating with a coin-like round containing a torch within a starburst. The stemmed jelly compote has frosted coins stamped 1886, measures 4 ½" diameter x 3 ¾" height. The 2nd piece, a handled nappy (a multi-purpose small bowl) measures 5 3/8" across the bowl x 1 ¾" at the handle, with clear coins stamped 1887. This nappy is particularly interesting because it contains a pot-stone, a type of inclusion, and is yellow under a UV light! Both pieces are heavy bright glass in mint condition, with no damage. Buyer to pay for shipping by USPS Priority with Delivery Confirmation, 4 lbs. from 06068. #425 |
