A Midnight Sketch 1:oo am Jan of 1975 ARIZONA
This unusual print, done by artist Ted (Ettore) DeGrazia, is not one that I have found in my research. I believe it is of the Witch (note long scary fingernails on main figure) that 'Eetoi' and his people must keep dancing all night.
It is double sided with a drawing on the reverse and the story of Eetoi, which I believe is a story of the Papago (Tohono O'odom) people.
I think the art was originally from a book since there are numbers 35 and 36 on each side.
This piece was purchased at the DeGrazia Studio in 1978 and was signed by Ted DeGrazia 1978 on the left, therefore this is a double-signed print, one on the right printed and one on the left in black original ink. For a reproduction to have value, it must also be hand-signed, or double-signed.
DeGrazia was born in 1909 in the eastern Arizona mining camp of Morenci. The Midnight Sketch's were DeGrazia's defense again insomnia; he did hundreds of those, with little handwritten captions on the bottom. After his early paintings were first published in Arizona Highways magazine, DeGrazia traveled to Mexico City to work with mural masters Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, who sponsored a solo exhibition of DeGrazia's artwork at the prestigious Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1942.
As the value of his original artwork soared, his fame and finances flourished.
To protest inheritance taxes on works of art, DeGrazia hauled about 100 of his paintings (about $1 million worth ) on horseback to the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix and set them ablaze in 1976. This infamous event was reported in such publications as The Wall Street Journal and People magazine, becoming part of DeGrazia's legend before his death in 1982.
A piece of DeGrazia artwork is to be cherished.

Ho'Ok DeGrazia print double sided, double signed
A second unusual print, done by artist Ted (Ettore) DeGrazia. On one side is the known print entitiled 'Ho- Ok' or 'basket of children' as I call it. It is double sided with a print that I have seen no where else and I call it 'chicken getting throat cut' as that is exactly what it shows. The colors are absolutely vibrant with a bit of mystique added. Probably from the darker side of DeGrazia and not sold to many, making it a 'rare' piece?

FISHING FLY ROD 9' HERTERS
This early 1900's fly fishing rod was used many times by my grandfather who was constantly on the river. It is 3 pieces, dark brown with yellow and orange rings and comes in a green canvas bag which inserts into a round metal (aluminum?) case with screw top. It has 'Herter's' on the cork end and there is some words in black on the rod of which the only one I can read seems to be 'Waseca'?. The rod (which does not have a reel) is in perfect condition with all of the eyes still solid and no damage to any of it. Please contact me if you need more information.
This rod and the Heddon 'Pal' reel on this site have excellent provenance!

TURQUOISE/SILVER SQUASH BLOSSOM SET
This is a set of Navajo jewelry that I purchased in the 1970's from an Indian trader in Tucson, AZ. The set is older pawn, probably made in the 1940's-1950's and consists of the large squash blossom necklace, matching earrings and matching bracelet.
No artist signature as usual for this timeframe of manufacture.
The stones are quite large, bluish-green with some matrix. Similar to Nevada or Bisbee turquiose but there is no provenance for stones only place of manufacture which was the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona.
Set includes squash blossom necklace, bracelet and earrings with all matching stones. Size of large blossom is over 3 inches, size of stone in bracelet is about 1 1/2 inch.
This is a very remarkable piece and a nice one for any collector of old Navajo pawn jewelry.

Old San Miguel Church, Santa fe, NM Photog in 1880
A photo postcard B 3007 showing 'Old San Miguel church, Santa Fe, NM' Photographed in 1880. The reverse reads ' the Oldest church. santa Fe, NM, in 1872, was visited by a severe storm and the triple tower of the Old Church was destroyed. It was rebuilt, as now seen, in 1888 , and the buttresses built against the front. The oldest cemetery is seen in front, with its adobe wall to the left. Chamuscado, in 1581, came as far as Tiguex, now Santa Fe, and left three Fransiscans. In 1582, Espejo, with a small party, found that the Fathers had been killed. They soon all returned to Mexico. San Miguel Church in 1890 Santa Fe, New Mexico
This black and white photo postcard B2939 shows 'San Miguel church 1890, Santa Fe, New Mexico'.
the reverse reads 'The oldest church in the United States is in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This picture represents it as it was in 1890. Many date the foundation of this remarkable church back to 1541. The Indians, in 1680, destroyed only the upper portion of its walls. DeVargas rebuilt it in 1695. It then became the Parish Church up to 1728. Father Juan de Jesus, killed by Indians in 1680, is buried here, also DeVargas, who died in 1704, and many other notable persons who lived many years ago'.
