This black and white photo postcard B2939 shows 'San Miguel church 1890, Santa Fe, New Mexico'.
the reverse reads 'The oldest church in the United States is in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This picture represents it as it was in 1890. Many date the foundation of this remarkable church back to 1541. The Indians, in 1680, destroyed only the upper portion of its walls. DeVargas rebuilt it in 1695. It then became the Parish Church up to 1728. Father Juan de Jesus, killed by Indians in 1680, is buried here, also DeVargas, who died in 1704, and many other notable persons who lived many years ago'. It does not mention the storm in 1873 from the other photo postcard on this site of same church.
It also has 'Copyrighted 1908 St. Michaels College, Santa Fe, New Mexico' on the side. The college was erected in 1878. Located in the Barrio de Analco Historic District, it was originally part of a private boy's school known as College of Santa Fe run by the Christian Brothers from 1878-1966. They copyrighted photos for postcards and sold them to early 1900 tourists in the area.
This postcard and three others are examples of beautiful vintage photos/postcards and are museum-quality, no longer available.
