Circa: 1940s
Condition: Very Good
Size: 3"
Type: Scarf Pin
Manufacturer: Miriam Haskell

I'm trekking un-chartered waters with this Miriam Haskell stickpin. Unbelievably, it is part of a prototype set that is shown in the "Miriam Haskell Jewelry" guide by Cathy Gordon and Sheila Damfiloff. Done in a beaded Indian look, it's made of green and orange beads. The back wires are covered with a filigree plate and topped with a signature plaque, dating it to no earlier than the 1940s. The clutch is a flower and holds an orange bead.

Prototypes were the first step in manufacturing, with a team making a decision whether a line would be manufactured. Once approved, each piece in the line was made by a sample maker with the time it took recorded. Manipulators then made two additional copies and timed their work. With this technique a cost analysis could be done to determine whether the line would go into production. This set was one that never made it that far. Those that didn't make it into production were either given as gifts to special store buyers, or put into the archives. The entire archived inventory was gradually sold off beginning in the 1990s.

Due to the non-uniformity of this piece, as well as the smaller size beads used intermittently around the center (unlike those shown in the book sample), I am inclined to think this may have been the first of the set to be made. Prototypes are not given book values due to the fact that they are one-of-a-kind, or one of only three ever made. This particular Miriam Haskell stickpin is something for the serious collector that wants to add a bit of history to their collection.

Condition: Very good. (White spots are from flash)
