John Peters and Adam Reed founded their pottery in Zanesville Ohio just before the turn of the century, using the local red clay to produce a variety of wares. Moss Aztec, introduced about 1912, has an unglazed exterior with designs molded in high relief and the recesses highlighted with a green wash. Only the interior is glazed to hold water. In 1922 the company became known as the Zane Pottery after Peters and Reed retired, and Harry McClelland became president.
