american brilliant cut glass

American Brilliant Period Cut Glass 1876 – 1917. Near the beginning of the Brilliant Period deposits of high grade silica were discovered in this country leading to glass-making superiority that won world acclaim. At the same time, many of Europe’s finest glass makers and cutters were immigrating to this country to seek their fortunes and they found ready markets for their glass cutting talents when America's cut glass industry moved into a very prosperous era in the closing quarter of the 19th century. Stunning patterns from leading glass houses such as Hawkes, Pairpoint, Carder and Libbey were developed and patented. This short lived era of " a true American achievement" slowly ceased to exist due to the rising costs of labor, introduction of the less labor intensive pressed glass and the beginning of World War I.

0408-05
American Brilliant Richmond Flashed Hobstar & Fan Low Bowl American Brilliant wheel cut glass, early to middle period, U-notched rim bowl with quality cut pattern of 8-point, double mitered and flashed hobstars alternating with modified Vesica cross hatched fan, diamond strawberry and fine cut star above hobstar border. Center pattern of alternating double cut silver diamond and fan set within deep miter cut pie sections.

Low bowl measures 7 inches in diameter by 2 inches high and is rated to be in very good condition. One tooth within a U-notch has chipped and is now smooth polished, another has a very small flake on the side just below the tip of the point. Both are hard to detect and smooth to the touch. No chips or flakes to the miter edges. Color is rated as very white, blank is heavy and clear. No sickness or residue.

Attribution of cutter or glass house has not been identified, however, similar cuts and a variation of this pattern is seen with Bergen's Richmond or possibly Straus. We gladly welcome a positive attribution or pattern name.

Thank you for browsing with us in Aurora's Attic.

Click for more detail...
0408-04
American Brilliant Complex Cut Argo Pattern Fruit Bowl American Brilliant Middle to Late Period complex geometric cut fruit bowl in a pattern strongly similar to Empire's Argo. Similar cutting techniques can also be seen in Pairpoint, Sinclair and Hoare pieces.

The pattern is comprised of six 16 point Prism Hobstars, six cross miter cut Diamond Star & Fan pyramids, Diamond Strawberry, Nailhead, Silver Diamond, Cane and Vesica motifs. Note the round and sawtooth u-notched rim. The bottom 24 point prism hobstar, cut within a geometric six sided miter deep cut frame is magnificent and brilliant. This is a well cut, clear and heavy blank.

Bowl is substantial not only in weight but in size, measuring 8.5 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches deep. We rate this bowl to be in exceptional condition for its age. No chips or flakes to the miter edges. Color is rated as very white, blank is heavy and clear. No sickness or residue.

Expected rub wear and fine scratching on the base. Acquired from an exceptional Estate auction of authenticated American Brilliant cut glass.

We welcome your input as to cutting house or pattern. Thank you for browsing with us in Aurora's Attic.

0408-42
American Brilliant Double Notched Diamond Zipper Low Bowl Beautiful wheel cut, hand polished American Brilliant low bowl with a well defined pattern of modified vesica and geometric miter cuts framing double cut, large double notched diamond prism zipper, nailhead, inverted fan and diamond strawberry motif. Center of bowl focuses on a deep miter cut Star of David and Hobstar within a 6 point miter cut clear star. Unidentified pattern, unsigned blank - possibly Straus.

Bowl has an 8.0 inch diameter and just shy of 2 inches high. Sharp sawtooth U-notch and round modified scallop rim shows some scarring as follows: A flake chip off the sides of two sawtooth partners(approximately half the size of a pencil eraser head) on the exterior (blends in quite well with the pattern). A total of 4 sawteeth have pin head dings to their side edges with (1) top chip to the tooth point. These are random around the total circumference of the rim and priced accordingly. Blank is heavy, very white and clear.

0408-44
American Brilliant Period Pinwheel & Fan Fruit Bowl American Brilliant middle period wheel cut glass fruit bowl, expertly deep cut with vesica and cross hatch miters, feathered pinwheel and prism star buttons, double notch wide fan, cross hatch double fan and diamond strawberry motifs. High wall bowl with scalloped sawtooth rim. A complex miter cut 16 point hobstar with prism center is the focal point of the bottom of the bowl.

Although this bowl is extremely well cut, very white and clear in color, it does have its wrinkles with approximately 12 teeth having small pinhead flakes. There is also a smooth, polished outside rim chip the size of an pencil eraser. Glass polishing should take care of the fine abrasions located on the under-base at the center of the Hobstar. We have priced this piece accordingly. I must note however, that even with these flaws, the tone that eminates from this bowl, even from simple handling, is incredibly beautiful.

Bowl measures 7.75 inches in diameter with a 3.0 inch depth.
