Antique Carlsbad Austria L. Straus & Sons Game Bird Plate
Superb Carlsbad Austria porcelain artist painted and gilt display plate with wild game bird motif, imported by Louis Straus & Sons of New York. Painted woodland and meadow scene of an exotic European Ruffled Grouse in natural setting. The artist's representation of this bird is extremely defined in stroke and color. A richly burnished heavy gold accents the sharply scallop cut rim.
Charger, measuring 11.25 inches is rated to be in near excellent condition overall with immaculate paint, 95% gold intact and no structural defects. The back shows minor rub wear and one glaze pop along the inner rim. Four holes for display purposes show only minor rub wear. Charger is marked with gray LS & S Carlsbad double circle overglaze mark, Austria. This mark represents that the manufacturing company professionally painted this piece exclusively for the Straus firm. Artist signed twice by Hines, one signature is actually integrated into the painting as part of the tall grass to the left of the bird's beak. The other is much smaller and painted within the brown shading near the bottom rim. Mark used between 1895 - 1917.
