Scarce In-Depth Book Watch and Clock Makers Undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive books ever published on the subject, this large in-depth text is a scholarly study of the history of clocks and watches, including a comprehensive list of thousands of clock and watch makers, their location, and dates of production.

BRITTEN'S OLD CLOCKS AND WATCHES AND THEIR MAKERS by G. H. Baillie, C. Clutton, and C.A. Ilbert, Bonanza Books, NY, 1899/1956.

The purpose of this work is to give a comprehensive and balanced picture of the whole development of the art, not over-emphasizing any one period or country nor spending time on unique examples of clock-making which did not contribute to that development. The list of former makers, for which 'Britten' is celebrated, has been enlarged by the addition of four thousand new names, while retaining the addresses and other invaluable information to be found nowhere but in the earlier editions of the list. Modern research has also contributed a great deal to earlier knowledge in the authoritative and colorful life-studies of famous makers with which the main text ends. 183 photo plates and 40 line drawings illustrate, with in-depth captions, clocks, watches, and mechanisms. The book is completed by a glossary of technical terms, a detailed bibliography, a list of British hall-marks, and a full index.

After more than half a century this book has been the standard work on horological history. It is comparably the finest work on its subject; a reliable tool of the trade for dealers, and essential guide for those starting to collect, and the most authoritative general reference work for the experienced collector

Rare Comprehensive Catalog Book Antique Clocks Watches Illustrated in color and black-and-white, this rare out-of-print book features antique clocks and watches found in the collection of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in London.

CLOCKS AND WATCHES - THE COLLECTION OF WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF CLOCKMAKERS by Cecil Clutton and George Daniels, Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications, London, 1975/1980.

This comprehensive catalog 'supersedes the last one made in 1949 by the great horologist, G.H. Bailie, and includes the large number of additions made to the collection since that date. The items are divided into three main categories, Watches, Clocks and Miscellaneous and these three are subdivided into specialized sections; each with an introduction providing historical and technical information about the more important entries. Chronological order is followed, and of the 692 items listed 200 are illustrated. It is thus possible to trace technical advances as well as to study the various experiments made since the earliest watches in the collection which date from circa 1580. With its numerous illustrations and precise information this catalogue will take its place as an essential reference book for horologists as well as for the general collector and all those interested in mechanical art.'

Scarce Book Antique American Clocks Watches 'With the aid of line drawings and over 50 photographs, the author describes the perfecting of the movements and the elaboration of cases, hoods, and dials that took place in 18th and 19th-century America.'

ANTIQUE AMERICAN CLOCKS & WATCHES, by Richard Thomson, D. Van Nostrand Co., Inc., Princeton, 1968.

In this book, 'the author traces the history of timekeeping in America, with a good look at its European, particularly, English background. The early American clockmakers, many of them trained by English masters, contributed refinement of accuracy to the art. An innovation was the use of inexpensive raw materials, which culminates in the mass production of wooden movements complete with dials and hands that could be mounted or cased as desired by the buyer. Many manufacturers brought these movements and cased and sold them under their own names.' This most informative book covers by chapter: The Beginnings of Timekeeping; Our English Heritage; Pennsylvania Clockmaking; New England clockmaking – the Boston School; Connecticut Clockmaking – Yankee Clocks; The Early American Watchmakers; The Waltham Story; the Watch Factories; and Index. The schools of clock and watch-making include such names as Stretch, Rittenhouse, Howard, Villard, Terry, and Thomas. The author 'includes valuable lists of dates and serial and production numbers to be found on the backs of timepieces from the important makers of the latter half of the nineteenth century.' There’s a wealth of information in this invaluable text.

Scarce Book Antique Pennsylvania Clocks / Clockmakers Illustrated in black-and-white, this early out-of-print book provides a definitive survey of

PENNSYLVANIA CLOCKS AND CLOCKMAKERS – An Epic of Early American Science, Industry, and Craftsmanship. By George Eckhardt, The Devin-Adair Co., NY, 1955 First Edition.

This scholarly survey provides a detailed account of Pennsylvania tall clocks and their European antecedents. It discusses their creators, who included Benjamin Franklin and Matthias Baldwin (of locomotive fame); of the part the clocks played in the development of Pennsylvania; of the succeeding styles in decoration, furniture, and folk art that strongly influenced their design. The book contains rare information on clock music; on the theory of clocks and their operations; on identification, appraisal, repair, and restoration; on Pennsylvania watches and watchpapers. A most valuable feature is the annotated lists of all known watch- and clockmakers in Philadelphia and in Pennsylvania generally. Included also in a new translation of Huygens’s Horologium, written in 1658, which is the original inventor’s explanation of the new pendulum-controlled clock. The discussion of mean, solar, and sidereal time is supplemented by the text of William Molyneux’s Sciothericum Telescopium. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs and line drawings, this book will prove indispensable for libraries, students of Pennsylvania local history, historical societies, horologists and collectors of clocks and antiques.
