THE BEST OF THE DOLL READER - Volume 3 edited by Virginia Ann Heyerdahl, Hobby House Press, 1988.

This most valuable book contains key article reprints from the Doll Reader between the years 1982 to 1985. Here is 'A priceless collection of articles from past issues of the Doll Reader magazine [which] have been compiled around specific themes relating to antique and collectible/modern dolls. The broad range of antique topics includes automata, china dolls, cloth dolls, French Bebes abd Bru’s, German pincushion and papier-mâché dolls, English composition dolls, and more. The dolls introduced at Toy Fair between 1983 and 1986, celebrity dolls, Lenci, Anili, Kruse, Shirley Temple dolls and Schoenhut dolls are among the many exciting collectible subjects explored by well-known doll authors.' Antique Doll Encyclopedia 3,000 Photos / Rare Book Given 3,000 illustrations and marks in color and black-and-white, this massive out-of-print book is the second volume of the
'Classic Collector’s Encyclopedia of Dolls,' first published in 1968.

'The new encyclopedia follows the same style and design as the first volume but is much larger, with 1,266 pages and over 3,000 illustrations. It supplements the first volume and enlarges its scope through the year 1930. It is arranged alphabetically and is fully cross-referenced.'

THE COLLECTOR’S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF DOLLS -VOLUME II by Dorothy S., Elizabeth A., and Evelyn J. Coleman, Crown Publishers, NY, 1986 First Edition.

'All the entries are brand new, as are the illustrations. You will learn all about all-bisque dolls; shoulder-head dolls of Alt, Beck & Gottschalck; Black dolls; Dapper Dan; French dolls, including nearly 100 different French Bebes; Gaultier dolls; Kathe Kruse dolls; and many, many more. A bold star marked at the end of an entry refers you to additional information in the first volume. This volume also contains new information on the creation and production of dolls’ clothes. Manufacturers often made the same dolls year after year but changed the type of clothes on the dolls almost every year and changed the dolls’ names with each new outfit. Dolls are identified through photographs, marks, and descriptions; by manufacturers, distributors, designers, and patentees; by years and methods of manufacture. Also included are descriptions of types of dolls and related subjects, such as wigs, feet, eyes, teeth, joints, clothing, sizes, and original prices. Advice is given for the care and repair of dolls.'

'This new encyclopedia identifies dolls from company records, copyright and patent files, catalogs and magazines, and from both American and European reference works. Makers include Kestner, Jumeau, Marseille, Simon & Halbig, Bahr & Proschild, Goebel, Kammer & Rienhardt, George Borgfeldt, Bebe Bru, and hundreds more. This volume, used in conjunction with the first volume, provides the most complete information available on dolls. It is indispensable for doll collectors, museums, libraries, lovers of antiques, fashion experts, and social historian all over the world.'

Antique Doll Types Makers 460+ ea Pictures Scarce Book THE COLLECTOR'S HISTORY OF DOLLS by Constance Eileen King, Bonanza Books, 1977.

This scarce out-of-print book features more than 460 illustrations, 30 in vivid color with captions that give complete details about each doll with size, marks, and attribution.

'Though defined as a representation of the human form to be played with as a toy by a child, the doll is here examined in its widest sense, and includes such items as piano babies, bathing beauties, boudoir dolls, fashion and crèche figures, all of which now fall within the ever-widening ambit of the collector….An attempt is made to give breadth to the survey by the inclusion of related prints and paintings. The development of such substances as rubber, celluloid and plastic all had an effect on the evolution of the doll, whose design changed significantly in adaptation to the new medium. Some of the finest dolls were produced in the 19th century, and it is this period that now most fascinates antique collectors, as purchase is still possible. The largest section is therefore devoted to this time, and dolls that the new collector can acquire quite cheaply, as well as the valuable and rare, are discussed. Until now little has been written about the English dollmakers, but here for instance the products of Deans Rag Book Company are traced from previously unpublished research.' Interestingly presented, this in-depth study of the development of doll is an essential reference book for the collector, dealer, or curator of dolls and will appeal to the general public and the social historian as well.
