Ext. Rare Book Antique Doll Clothes 1700-1929 Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white, this early out-of-print book is bible-thick and filled with everything one needs to know about antique doll clothing. 'The most complete book on dolls’ clothes ever published, by the authors of The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Dolls, this book contains more than 800 illustrations in color and black-and-white and patterns for more than 400 garments.'

THE COLLECTOR’S BOOK OF DOLLS’ CLOTHES - Costumes in Miniature: 1700-1929 by Dorothy S., Elizabeth A., and Evelyn J. Coleman, Crown Publishers Inc., NY, 1975.

This rare comprehensive book is simply fascinating. 'Presented here is a wealth of highly desirable, largely inaccessible information for all doll collectors and aficionados of doll art. A historical survey of the original clothes worn by the dolls made in France, Germany, and the English-speaking countries from 1700 to 1929, a documented chronological record, almost a social history of childhood itself – all these and more are contained in this indispensable book.'

'The authors present their findings chronologically, each chapter beginning with a summary of the main characteristics and the innovations of that particular period and a notation of the major changes from the preceding period. The clothing, discussed according to the age and sex represented in the doll, includes commercially and homemade garments, and also professionally made costumes – dresses and suit for various occasions, even headwear, outerwear, underwear, and footwear.'

The book covers by chapter: The Importance of Original Clothes; Before 1790-Dolls Prior to the French Revolution; 1790-1815 War Years’ Dearth of Dolls; 1815-1837 Peace, Commercial Prosperity; 1837-1851 Growth of International Competition; 8151-1865 Related Industries, Accessories, Patterns, and Periodicals; 1865-1878 Fashionable Lady Dolls and Their Wardrobes; 1878-1889 French Bebes; 1889-1900 Kate Greenaway Period; 1900-1908 German Doll-Face Era; 1908-1915 Character Dolls; 1915-1921 Wartime Dolls; 1921-1929 American Leadership in Dolls; Changing Patterns; Index to Patterns; Appendix: Clothing Your Doll Authentically; Glossary; Selected Bibliography; Index; and Patterns.

More than 800 dolls, many with complete wardrobes of their original clothes, are shown in the informative color and black-and-white illustrations and some hundred or so excerpts from contemporary catalogs. The correct clothes for specific types of dolls at specified times are noted, so that now a doll in its original cloths can be dated for more precisely than has previously been possible; unmarked dolls in commercial clothes can be more readily identified too. A special feature of this invaluable book is a pattern section that enables the reader to reproduce more than 400 doll garments. Comprehensive and thoroughly documented, [this book] is a must for all libraries, museums, and educators, for students of costume, and for doll collectors both here and abroad.'
