Rare Book Chinoiserie Ceramics Textiles Furniture Art The origins of "Chinoiserie lie in the extravagant tales of Marco Polo and the merchant adventurers of the seventeenth century. The fantasy of ‘Cathay’, the mysterious East, fired the imagination of all Europe with tempting visions of an exotic land. Excitement at the luxury and splendor of eastern imports grew to a fever as Chinese goods entered the salons of the West. In the eighteenth century the French court’s devotion to the chinoiserie style led to its adoption throughout Europe, from Palermo to St. Petersburg, while England, equally affected by the passion for all things Chinese, bedecked its houses and gardens with chinoiseries of its own individual kind. Chinoiserie burgeoned throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, emerging as one of Europe and America’s most vigorous and versatile decorative styles." Lavishly illustrated in color, this rare out-of-print book pictures and describes in depth art, textiles, ceramics, furniture, and more.

CHINOISERIE by Dawn Jacobson, Phaidon Press Ltd., London, 1993/1999.

Chinese Pottery Porcelain Art Rare Comprehensive Book With an emphasis on antique Chinese ceramics, this rare out-of-print book shows the evolution of design in Chinese pottery and porcelain and highlights other artistic achievements made by discussing several other pieces of notable Chinese works of art. Approximately 75 pottery and porcelain items, 5 bronze items, 7 jade items, and a dozen miscellaneous items including furniture, lacquer, and paintings are illustrated in full-page color plates and identified in detail. "When this pictorial survey of the whole field of Chinese art was originally published, it was immediately recognized as an outstanding contribution to its subject. The reissue of this important book makes it possible once again to view and assess the contribution of China to the arts of the world, within the compass of a single volume. It is however, the 100 pages of superb color illustrations, in as near facsimile as possible, which have made this book an eagerly sought collector’s piece."

CHINESE ART by R.L. Hobson, Spring Books, London, 1927/1964.

The bulk of this book illustrates antique Chinese pottery and porcelain and provides a fine survey of ceramic wears covering 2,000 years. This book is a collector’s item in itself and an invaluable resource reference for the connoisseur on Chinese decorative arts.

7.5 in. x 10 in. hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 224 pages.

Book Chinese Horses in Jade Pottery Bronze The superb color photographs and in-depth captions combine to make this beautiful text an invaluable resource reference work for the collector, dealer, or historian of Chinese objects of art. Illustrated are Chinese horses and horse related items made of jade, bronze, pottery and stoneware, and more.

IMPERIAL CHINA: THE ART OF THE HORSE IN CHINESE HISTORY edited by Bill Cooke, published by Kentucky Horse Park, Harmony House Publishers, Propsect, KY, 2000.

'This is a world exclusive exhibition, and one of the largest ever to leave China, featuring more than 350 artifacts and spanning more than 3,000 years. It is appropriate that this exhibition, featuring artifacts and art objects relating to the horse be shown at the world’s largest museum dedicated to the impact of the horse on human history, International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park. My hope is that as you view this collection you will consider the importance and historic significance of these objects in their relationship to life in China from the Zhou Dynasty (ca. 1100 BC) to the present century. As you leave this exhibit consider how your expanded understanding of Chinese culture has given you a new and better perspective of the Chinese, their history, and culture.' 164 plates in stunning color comprise the catalog; introductory and explanatory essays, by many experts in the field of Chinese history, art and culture, are offered as a prelude to the catalog. Captions are in-depth and relate the size, medium, provenance, region of origin, dynasty of origin. There is a wonderful variety of artistic media here and a book that will provide the reader a repeatable armchair tour of an exhibition designed to please horse lovers as well as students of Oriental culture.

9 in. x 11.5 in. softback in new condition. 182 pages.
