Antique Glass Pottery Furniture Repros Marks Rare Book Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white, this early out-of-print book is a definitive guide to antique reproductions primarily glass, but also including ceramics, candlemolds, some furniture and metalware.

MORE CONFUSING COLLECTIBLES: A GUIDE TO THE INDENTIFICATION OF REPRODUCTIONS by Dorothy Hammond, CBP Publishing, KS, 1972.

'To compensate for the growing shortage of antiques offered today, there is a fairly vigorous turnover in the field of reproductions…. The study of these new objects has many facets, all of which become brighter as our knowledge increases. In every period, collectors have been faced with confusing new collectibles, but as the years destroy the surviving symbols of a generation, those articles that remain become very precious to the lovers of nostalgia. Rather than depreciate, their value increases with age—often times very substantially—proving that they do have a place in every period. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying these new objects, as long as the owner does not claim that they are elderly, or an antique.'

The author provides numerous photo plates (mostly black and white) to show new articles made to look like antiques. These truly are collectible, but honesty and awareness are necessary to distinguish them from their antique prototypes. To this end, the book contains a good section on marks of reproduced items. The author suggests that a good rule of thumb is to purchase objects that have genuine aesthetic value, were well made and have a grace and beauty in themselves. In the long run, such items may appreciate in value just as do their elderly relatives. Thus, collecting new or reproduced items based on antique wares can be a rewarding hobby and the object of this book is 'to help the collector develop the skill, knowledge, and perceptive eye to recognize our many new confusing collectibles.'

Rare In-Depth Book Reproduction / Fake Antique Glass Over 150 black-and-white photographs illustrate approximately 1,000 items which allow the reader to discriminate antique fakes and reproductions from originals. Where two-thirds of this book reviews antique glass originals versus glass fakes and reproductions, this text also contains some information on faked American silver, ceramics, mechanical banks, ironwork and more.

ANTIQUE FAKES AND REPRODUCTIONS by Ruth Webb Lee, Lee Publications, MA, 1938/1966 enlarged and revised.

Mrs. Lee's pioneer books on the subject of early American glass, her practical knowledge gained from handling thousands of pieces, and her tireless crusade against fakes, have all combined to establish her as America's leading authority on the subject. Treated in this volume are comprehensive chapters, fully illustrated, devoted to reproductions in blown glass, pattern glass, milk-white glass, reproduction and souvenir cup plates, historical flasks, paper weights, lamps and globes, Bohemian glass, dolphin candlesticks and compotes, iron mechanical, faked American silver, and more. No prudent buyer can be without this book. One mistake may be several times more costly than its purchase price. A collector's item in itself, this scarce text is an indispensable reference.

Miniature Mt. Washington Burmese Art Glass Pitcher This exceptional miniature Burmese pitcher is only 2.5" high and approximately 3.1" across from the edge of the spout to the edge of the handle. The colors are brilliant with an evenly graduated color change from a soft canary yellow at the base to a salmon pink at the top. The upper inside of the pitcher has a deeper salmon colored pink. The pontil has some slight roughness. The superb symmetry, the magnificent color, and miniature size of this pitcher make it a most desirable piece of collectible art glass.
Most probably produced by Mt. Washington, this piece of art glass has no defects or repairs.

Rare In-Depth Illustrated Book Tiffany Art Glass With over 350 illustrations, many in full color, this early authoritative text surveys the art glass creations of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

LOUIS C. TIFFANY - REBEL IN GLASS by Robert Koch, Crown Publishers Inc., NY, 1964/1982.

"This profusely illustrated biography by a Tiffany collector and expert on Art Nouveau and the stained glass decades presents in all its varied aspects the remarkable career of a versatile nonconformist, whose unique designs in glass made his name a byword at the turn of the century, yet whose work, only a generation later, was derided - and revived - when collectors of art glass and modern decorators were increasingly intrigued by his free forms and bold, metallic colors." Pictured in color and black and white are many biographical photos of Tiffany and his works of art that spanned from architectural design and interior decorating (including wall papers and stained glass windows) to the delicate accessories of art glass, art pottery, stained glass lamps and more. Numerous pieces of Tiffany glass and other objects of art are pictured and described. This book is still considered one of the leading authoritative references on Tiffany - his life and his work.

AMERICAN ART NOUVEAU GLASS . By Albert Christian Revi, Thomas Nelson & Son, NJ, 1968.

The closing years of the nineteenth century witnessed more radical changes in the decorative arts than the whole previous century. Identified as Art Nouveau , this rebellion began about 1890 and continued for nearly thirty-five years. This rebellion was most evident in the art glass produced during this period by such notables as Tiffany, Nash, Durand, Steuben, Handel, and others. This book reviews in fascinating detail the history and accomplishments of these firms and others.

Reviewed by chapter are: The Tiffany Glass Co. (lustred glassware, agate, lava, reactive, carved, favrile, Tiffany windows and lamps, etc.); Douglas Nash Corp. (Chintz, tinted, bubbly, single and double-ring glassware, 'Silhouette' patterns, and more); Quezal Art Glass Co.; Lustre Art Glass Co.; Steuben Glass Works (aurene, Tyrian, Verre de Soie, jade, cluthra, cintra, peach blow, moss agate, intarsia, grotesque, silverine, and more); Vineland Flint Glass Works (Lustre, peacock, Egyptian and Moorish Crackle, Venetian Lace, Durand Lamps and Shades, Kimble’s cluthra, Durand Color Code Letters Used For Decorations and Colors, and more); The Union Glass Co.; Fostoria Glass Specialty Co.; The Honesdale Decorating Co.; The Imperial Glass Co; The Fenton Art Glass Co.; The H.C. Identification of American Art Glass / Scarce Book Lavishly illustrated in color, this early out-of-print book provides a pictorial survey of American art glass.

IDENTIFICATION OF AMERICAN ART GLASS by Richard Carter Barret, Bennington Museum, VT, 1964/1965 presents objects from the Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Limric collection, in excellent color photo plates.

'This publication is nothing more than an attempt to clarify some types of wares, so that new collectors will know what terms to use for each different type of Art. Glass…. The purpose of these color illustrations is to show 175 different pieces of glass, representing about 52 distinctly different kinds of American Art Glass.' The author concedes that most art glass was not marked by incision onto the pieces, and that the 52 types do not constitute the entirety of American production, 'however, familiarity with the content of the following pages will result in a working knowledge of the entire field of American Art Glass.'

Fourteen color plates, each with several examples, are described in detailed captions, and include many names familiar to collectors: amberina and plated amberina, Burmese, Pomona, chocolate, coralene, holly amber, Crown Milano, MOP, slag, cranberry, spangled and spattered glass, aurenes, and many more. Makers include Tiffany, Steuben, Libbey, New England Glass, Hobbs, Brockunier Co., Greentown, Mt. Washington, C.F. Monroe, and many others. For any connoisseur or collector seeking an overview of the subject, this book will make an excellent addition to the reference library.

L.G. Wright Art Glass 1,892 Examples / Scarce Book 1,892 items are illustrated in color; many more are pictured in black-and-white. This in-depth book reviews the history and production of the art glass of

THE L.G. WRIGHT GLASS COMPANY. By James Measell and W.C. 'Red' Roetteis, The Glass Press, Inc./Antique Publications, OH, 1997.

Items pictured and described include colored glass, carnival and slag glass, cranberry and vaseline glass, opalescent and amberina glass, peach blow, rub glass, and more. "For about six decades, the L.G. Wright Glass Company has conducted its business from the small town of New Martinsville, West Virginia. Yet this firm has remained generally unknown to the American glass collecting public for many years. Its founder, L.G. 'Si' Wright was a private man, and the company did not advertise its wares or distribute a retail catalog. Nonetheless, some pioneer glass researchers, such as Minnie Watson Kamm and Arthur Peterson, learned of the Wright company and mentioned some of its glassware, but the extent of the Wright line was a well-kept secret. Churchill’s words are appropriate: '…a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.' Nevertheless, the authors have had access to company archives and products in order to publish a celebration of this superb glass. Contents are arranged in chronological order from 1936, getting started, through expansion in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s boom times. Later chapters treat of Mrs. Wright’s leadership in the 70’s and 80’s. Finally, the book treats of L.G. Wright glass in the 1990’s, More than 100 pages of catalog and pictorial history of the production are presented with detailed captions. Here is a wonderful book to add to the reference library of all lovers of art glass and American traditions of glassmaking craftsmanship.
