French Galle Desire Christian Cameo Art Glass Rare Book 'By the terms of a secret contract executed between Desire Christian and Galle in the years 1885-1896, Christian agreed to supply Galle in Nancy with artistically designed and decorated glass vases for the French and world market. During the eleven year life of this secret association, thousands of glass objects produced by Christian were attributed to Emile Galle – a belief that has persisted to this day.'

Emile Galle French Cameo Art Glass / Scarce Illust Book Beautiful color photographs supplement a rich narrative in this rare out-of-print book on Emile Galle and his French Art Nouveau glass creations.

THE ART OF EMILE GALLE by Tim Newark, Chartwell Books, Inc., N.J., 1989.

'The son of a pottery owner and ceramics vendor, the young Galle studied both botany and glassmaking, eventually setting up his own glass workshop in his home town of Nancy. A prolific designer of glass, ceramics and furniture, Galle was one of the founders of the ‘Alliance Provinciale des Industries d’Art, better known as the Ecole de Nancy arm of Art Nouveau, which also included Victor Prouve and Louis Majorelle….Galle’s vases, goblets, lamps and other glass pieces, as well as his tables, beds, vitrines, cabinets and other pieces of furniture—these usually featuring elaborate marquetry designs, landscapes, still-lifes and the like—were very much ruled by the master’s love of nature, which he reproduced with botanical, zoological and entomological precision. Among the loveliest and rarest Galle works are his dragonfly tables—massive insects forming carved-wood or cast-bronze legs and mounts on the furniture—and his unique sculptural pieces in layered glass, often accompanied by a Symbolist line or whole poem etched onto their surfaces. Galle was indeed a poet in glass, with a vision both distinctive and influential....'

This beautifully illustrated work—all in full color—represents the full scope of Galle’s art and will make an invaluable addition to the libraries of collectors, curators, and students of the masterpieces of the Art Nouveau style.

500 ea. French Cameo Art Glass Makers Marks / Rare Book More than 500 cameo glass pieces are featured in this rare out-of-print book on French art glass. 'A wide variety of styles and techniques are represented. The works of more than fifty producers of cameo glass are illustrated. This is, by far, the most comprehensive photographic presentation of French cameo glass available at this time.'

FRENCH CAMEO GLASS by Berniece and Henry Blount, Wallace-Homestead Books, Iowa, 1968 First Edition.

'History, techniques of carving, and manufacturers of French cameo glass are discussed. Some processes often present in cameo work are also discussed and illustrated. Information relative to marks and signatures is important in art glass. Signatures and methods of signing are discussed with 192 signatures from cameo glass copied in actual size.'

This in-depth text covers by chapter: History of Cameo Glass; Production of Cameo Glass; Techniques Other Than Cameo; Signatures; French Cameo Glass (Rousseau and Leveille; Galle; Daum; Muller; deVez, Mont Joy and Pantin; Delatte; Le Verre Francais; D’Argental, Richard and Arsall; Baccarat, Val Saint Lambert, and Saint Louis; D. Christian Meisenthal, Vallerysthal, and Burgun and Schverer; Schneider; Kosta, Reijmyre, and Hadelands; Others); Color Illustrations (Galle, Daum, Muller, Others, Lamps and Chandeliers, Chinese or Peking, English, and American); Signatures Copied from Cameo Glass; Bibliography; and Index.

'Interest in cameo glass reached its peak in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In recent years there has been a revival of enthusiasm for this type of glass. As the advanced skills of artist, glassblower and engraver required to produce fine quality cameo work are more generally known, there will undoubtedly be an increasing appreciation for this type of artistic expression. Those who appreciate beauty in glass will find pleasure and excitement in this book. Collectors and dealers will find it essential for study and as a reference text.' This book is an invaluable reference and would make a fine addition to the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of French art glass.

Art Nouveau Deco Art Glass Marks Makers Types Rare Book 314 color and black-and-white photographs with identifying captions highlight this early out-of-print book which covers in-depth the makers, marks and types of art glass produced during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.

GLASS – ART NOUVEAU TO ART DECO by Victor Arwas, Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., NY 1977/1980.

'The development of cameo carving in England heralded an international golden age of glass. Craftsmen, designers and artists vied with each other to create new and beautiful forms and colors, researching new and complex techniques, developing rare skills and achieving extraordinary effects. Art Nouveau and Symbolism provided the artistic foundations for such creators as Galle, the Daum brothers, Tiffany and Loetz to produce consistently new and exciting wares. As artistic movements changed Art deco and Functionalism succeeded as the stylistic vehicles for many new creators.'

'This book is the first to collect and evaluate the considerable amount of valuable research previously carried out on the glass producers of the time. All valuable information on the most important and a large number of lesser known but interesting glassworkers is here carefully weighed and presented, from the English cameo artists of the mid-nineteenth century to those glass designers and glasshouses of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bohemia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden, the united stets and Russia still producing at the outbreak of war in 1939. Wherever individuals or firms survived the war their story has been brought up to date. The historical background and development of each designer and firm is followed by a description of their styles and techniques and an evaluation of their achievement, all profusely illustrated by photographs of their work. The clear and comprehensive presentation of material together with the many superbly reproduced illustrations, the majority of which were commissioned especially for this book, make this an essential reference work invaluable to collectors, as well as for those with a more general interest in the period and its glass. There are 316 illustrations, 104 in full color.'
