Rare In-Depth Book Encyclopedia Antique Toys Lavishly illustrated with 380 photographs, 70 in full color, this early out-of-print book is an in-depth guide to antique toys.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TOYS by Constance Eileen King, Robert Hale, London, 1978 First Edition.

Presenting a world in miniature, this compendium deals with the history and identity of all kinds of toys, teddy bears, trains, lead soldiers, games and much more. The entertaining automata and musical boxes which were a specialty of French and Swiss craftsmen are listed in detail. The wheeled toys included range from the smallest pushalong to the child-sized cars of Andre Citroen, while another form of children's transport is the pram in all its variations. The history of the ever popular rocking horse is also traced. Germany, long the main production center for wooden toys, was also the first to produce model soldiers, cast in lead, and the vast range of metal toys of all kinds is covered in special sections on the German, French, American and British varieties. A separate chapter deals with the highly collectible category of toy and model trains, Finally there are sections on the more social and educational children's amusements board and table games, jigsaw puzzles, books and the toy theater. This publication, while striving for completeness, has also attempted to avoid what often has been presented before and to illustrate seldom-seen items with particular care. Written with collectors needs firmly in mind, this book will make a rich addition to the reference shelves of all toy collectors and enthusiasts.

Vintage 50s - 60s Lunch Boxes Tin Plastic / Early Book 'In the grade school lunchrooms of the fifties and sixties, a lunch box carried more than the weight of a tuna fish sandwich and a carton of milk. A box adorned with Barbie, the Beatles, or Hopalong Cassidy placed the child squarely with the lunchroom elite, while a dull red plaid revealed a child who was obviously not in control of his or her parents.'

This early out-of-print book is a pictorial identification guide to

THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES LUNCH BOX by Scott Bruce, Chronicle Books, San Francisco, 1988 First Edition.

This color-illustrated book 'pays tribute to these metal and vinyl bearers of the icons of popular culture into the halls of America’s schools. In a lively, humorous text, Scott Bruce tells the story of the American lunch box, from the manufacturers’ fierce competition for the rights to characters, to the extraordinary popularity lunch boxes now enjoyed as collectors’ items. Over 100 photographs of colorful boxes decorated with scenes from ‘Bonanza,’ ‘Get Smart,’ and ‘The Jetsons’ are sure to bring back vivid memories of the days when ‘taking lunch’ meant something.' Each picture has an accompanying caption, which identifies the name, maker, date, and a brief description of the character depicted on the lunch box.

Vintage Kewpie Dolls and Art incl. Values / Scarce Book KEWPIES – DOLLS & ART with Value Guide – 2nd Edition by John Axe, Hobby House Press, Inc., Maryland, 1987/2001.

'KEWPIES – DOLL & ART is a truly unique reference volume that addresses the many creations of Rose O’Neill, the ‘Mother of Kewpie,’ and Joseph L. Kallus, who translated O’Neill’s original artwork into dolls and figurines. In more than 200 black-and-white and color illustrations from Kallus’ extensive files and records – including many illustrations never before published – this collector’s reference work details all the many aspects of the creative output of Rose O’Neill and Joseph L. Kallus, including Kewpie in dozens of different forms and materials.'

The information in this text is invaluable! 'Rose O’Neill’s most famous creation – Kewpie – originated as illustrations in the Woman’s Home Companion in December of 1909. For many years she was commissioned to create Kewpie illustrations for various publications and for advertisements. A market was seen for three-dimensional likenesses of Kewpie and Joseph L. Kallus, a 17-year-old art student, was hired to sculpt Kewpies as doss and figurines in 1912.' This scarce text "tells about the lives of Rose O’Neill and Joseph L. Kallus and their many original creations, the most important for collectors of which are dolls and figurines, including Kewpie in dozens of different forms and materials. For this reference volume Joseph Kallus’ extensive files and papers were made available to the author by Jesco, Inc. The book includes more than 200 illustrations, many of them never before published, form the Kallus files, as well as collectibles from several O’Neill collections." This extensive pictorial volume is a must-buy book for the collector, dealer, or historian of Kewpie dolls and Kewpie memorabilia.

MECHANICAL TOYS: HOW OLD TOYS WORK by Athelstan and Kathleen Spilhaus, Crown Publishers, Inc., N.Y., 1989.

TIN TOYS: 1945-1975 . By Michael Buhler, (this edition by) Mandarin Publishers, Hong Kong, 1978.

After the Second World War, the US Zone of Occupation included Nuremburg, the site of several toy factories. American companies contracted with these early German toy makers to produce wares for American toy markets. This book tells the story of the Americanization of some aspects of European and Japanese cultures through the toy-making industries with American children in mind. 'With names like Gunthermann, Arnold, Gama, Gescha, Technofix, Tipp, Kellerman, Distler and Sehuco, the German toy industry flourished throughout the forties and fifties; exporting the US and the rest of the world.' This beautifully illustrated book—all in vivid color—shows cars, trams, airplanes, trains, police motorcycles, trucks and accessories. The collection is mainly comprised to what used to be thought of a 'toys for boys,' but also includes clowns and other figures. It traces the increasing mechanization of toys and the growing sophistication of toys made possible by innovations such as battery operation and radio-control. Authoritatively and enthusiastically presented, this text will make an essential addition to the reference library of toy collectors and aficionados everywhere.

Antique Dolls Metal Toys incl. Automata / Scarce Book METAL TOYS & AUTOMATA by Constance King, Magna Books, London, 1989.

Featuring 'over 150 beautiful color illustrations' this book is a fine reference source for collectors of antique metal toys. It gives 'practical advice on main collecting areas, how to avoid expensive mistakes, how to care for old toys and how to spot the work of the most famous makers; this guide is expertly written and is an essential companion to anyone collecting old toys or wishing to start a collection. Toy collecting has rapidly increased in popularity over the last few years, record sales being reported internationally. The universal appeal is, in part, due to the widely varied categories of toys available. There is something for everybody. In this book we look at probably the most collectible areas within this vast area, from the more expensive categories such as automata made in 19th century France by such famous makers as Theroude, Decamps and Lambert to modern day metal soldiers. Whatever your first love, railways, toy soldiers, automata or die cast toys, you will be enthralled by the collection shown and described here of all Metal Toys and thankful for the valuable advice.'
