Rare Book Antique British Pewter Britannia Metal This text is a scholarly survey of the history and development of antique British pewter and Britannia metal supplemented by 102 black-and-white photographs and 16 color plates illustrating examples of this ware.

BRITISH PEWTER AND BRITANNIA METAL , by Christopher A. Peal, Peebles Press, NY, 1971.

The book sets the background of British pewter through the centuries, and with a new brisk approach, the subject is presented in great detail. It gives for the first time information concerning new types previously unrecorded and presents many facts not hitherto crystallized, and similarly breaks new ground with aids to the detection of fakes. The less experienced collector is not forgotten and the author, besides providing a guide to spotting fakes and forgeries, shows how a superb collection can be assembled using the knowledge which he has gathered from many years of research. It is common knowledge that Britannia metal is proving to be of growing interest to the Pewter collector and consequently this alloy is also discussed in some depth.

This in-depth text covers by chapter: Introduction; Acquiring and Collecting; Cleaning and Repairing; Marks - Selection of Some of the More Frequent / Touch Marks / Secondary Marks / Official Stamp Numbers; Romano-British, Early Medieval-to End Sixteenth Century; 1600-1710; 1710-1820; 1820 Onwards; Scottish, Welsh, Irish and Cannel Isle Pewter; Britannia Metal; Fakes and Reproductions; Appendix I: Where Pewter Can be Seen in Museums, etc.; Appendix II: Short Bibliography; and Appendix III: Combined Glossary and Index. On all counts this book will be essential reading to the advanced collector or the novice and should prove to be a constant source of reference. Rare In-Depth Book Antique American Pewter / Marks The profuse black-and-white photographs, detailed line drawings, in-depth information on marks, and supplemental rich narrative combine to make this early out-of-print book an invaluable

GUIDE TO AMERICAN PEWTER. By Carl Jacobs, The McBride Company Inc., NY, 1957 First Edition.

This rare comprehensive book 'lists alphabetically all known American pewterers, including the names of hundreds of newly discovered craftsmen, with their place of work, working dates, rarity, and surviving forms made by each. Every known touchmark is pictured under the name of the pewterer, with an indication of chronological usage and comparative scarcity. Specific dollar valuations are given for each form with its various touchmarks. The three-hundred-odd touchmarks are illustrated in line drawings to scale, and numerous other drawings show the evolution of various important pewter forms – teapots, coffee pots, porringers, basins, plates, mugs, bowls, tankards, and more – many with their regional usage and variations. Many black-and-white photographs illustrate outstanding examples of American pewter.'

An added feature in the Appendix is The Danforth Family in Connecticut, who for five generations were among the foremost American pewterers, and Characteristic Pewter Forms, which illustrate with line drawings distinctive shapes and patterns of pewter ware. This book is an indispensable reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of antique American pewter.

Antique Pewter Types Makers Marks Hallmarks / Rare Book This classic reference book is a collector’s item in itself. 'First published in England 35 years ago, this lengthy monograph by the late H.H. Cotterell is far and away the most authoritative and comprehensive work on old British pewter. It has, in fact, no rival. The new edition is as complete and lavishly illustrated as the original; nothing has been omitted…it traces the history of pewter-making in the British Isles, and goes on to identify every mark and imprint by which such pewter is known…'

OLD PEWTER – ITS MAKERS AND MARKS – In England, Scotland and Ireland – An Account of the Old Pewterer and His Craft by Howard Herschel Cotterell, Charles E. Tuttle Co., Rutland, VT, 1963/1970.

'Illustrating all known marks and secondary marks of the old pewterers with a series of plates showing the chief types of their wares…A glance at the chapter titles in Mr. Cotterell’s table of contents will readily indicate to the reader the thoroughness with which he has presented the ‘account of the old pewterer and his craft,’ as he calls it: I. Short Historical Introduction; II. The History of Pewter-Marking as Told in the Records; III. The Old Pewterers and Their Touchplates; IV. Secondary Marks, Collectors’ Difficulties, Pewterers’ Tokens and Trade-Cards, Etc.; V. Illustrations of Examples of Pewter-Ware; VI. Alphabetical List of Pewterers, with Illustrations of Their Marks, Where Known; VII. Alphabetical List of Those Marks Which with the Device, Bear Only the Initials of Their Owners’ Names; VIII. Illustrations of Those Marks Which Must Be Designated as ‘Obscure,’ for Want of Any Indication as to Their Ownership; IX. Index to devices in Marks Illustrated in Chapters VI, VII, and VIII; X. Index to Hall Marks in Chapters VI, VII, and VIII. In addition to the information provided in these ten chapters, Mr. Cotterell supplies a list of hallmarks without owner’s initials, a bibliographical list of works dealing with British pewter and pewterers, and a general index.' A most complete reference, this early out-of-print book is hard-to-find, and would make a fine addition to the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of British pewter.

Rare Book American Pewter 1928-1931 / Marks This rare out-of-print book is highlighted with approximately 150 black-and-white photographs of American pewter ware and pewter makers’ marks.

THE MYSTERY ERA OF AMERICAN PEWTER 1928-1931 by Carolyn Smith and Peggy Hixon, Universal Press Inc., OK, 1979.

'On the following pages we have listed in alphabetical order the trademarks of the pewter of 1928-1931 with photographs of a representative piece and the trademarks, plus information we have about the manufacturing company. Marks we have been unable to identify are shown at the end of this section. There are two indices in the back of the book: one listing the pewter by trade name and one listing manufacturers and the pewter lines they made. There have also been a few marks we have seen that we know nothing about. These are ‘Lenox Pewter,’ ‘Frederick Lunning Hand Made Pewter,’ and a triangle with the word ‘Wiese’ inside and the words ‘Handmade Pewter’ on two sides of the triangle. Of the 86 different pewter marks in our collection, we have identified 63 as to company of manufacture and time of manufacture. The major portion of this book deals with these marks.' This book, a collector’s item in itself, is an indispensable reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of American pewter."

THE AMERICAN PEWTERER: HIS TECHNIQUES & HIS PRODUCTS. By Henry J. Kauffman, Thomas Nelson & Sons, (Canada), Limited, 1970.

This scolarly text covers by chapter: Pewter; The Metal; The Workshop; Buttons and Spoons (Casting Spoons); Basins and Plates; Inkstands; Beakers and Mugs; Tankards, Flagons, and Measures; Coffeepots and Teapots; Porringers; Candlesticks; Other Objects (Bottles, Sugar Bowls, Chalices, Creamers, Ladles, Salts, Funnels, Sundials and Clock Faces); Britannia; The Metal; The Factory; The Product; Appendix; Bibliography; and Index.

This book "deals with the casting and finishing techniques used [for antique pewter]. Photographs of pewter products and detailed illustrations of the molds that cast them supplement the text. In producing some of the more elaborately contoured pieces, such as teapots, as many as six separate castings were required and then they were carefully fitted and fused together to make the finished product. In the final chapters of the book, the casting and spinning techniques used in the early nineteenth century when Britannia metal supplanted pewter and mass production methods were coming into their own are also discussed and illustrated. Everyone who is interested in pewter, novice or experienced collector, will find 'The American Pewterer' an invaluable addition to his library."

Rare In-Depth Book Antique British / European Pewter '…precious little has been published for the American reading public which deals with pewter made outside this country. Curiously enough, however, until the author began the preparation of this book, it had, apparently, occurred to no one to outline the salient characteristics which distinguish the pewterware of one country from another, or the ware of Great Britain as a whole from that of the Continent in general and in particular. The performing of just that service is the purpose of the pages, which follow. For obvious reasons, all discussions of American pewter has been avoided.'

NATIONAL TYPES OF OLD PEWTER by Howard Herschel Cotterell, Adolphe Riff, and Robert M. Vetter. Weathervane Books, NY, 1972 First Edition.

This book is a compilation of articles published in the magazine, 'ANTIQUES.' Information on styles, marks, and makers is given. Profusely illustrated in black and white, there is also extremely rich narrative, which assists the reader in identifying and authenticating antique pewter wares from abroad. Given the authoritative monographs on the subject, this book is an invaluable resource reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of English and European antique pewter.
