CONFUSING COLLECTIBLES – A GUIDE TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF REPRODUCTIONS by Dorothy Hammond, Wallace-Homestead Book Co., Iowa, 1969.

'Here in ten concise, informative chapters the reader will find the results of three years of painstaking research in the bewildering field of antique reproductions, adaptations, reissues and fakes. Picasso Ceramic Art Identification Dates / Rare Book This rare out-of-print book provides an in-depth pictorial survey of the ceramic art of Picasso.

CERAMICS OF PICASSO by Georges Ramie. Ediciones Poligrafa, S.A. 1985 First Edition.

Lavishly illustrated, this book has 223 color photographs with complete descriptions of Picasso art in ceramics. Translated by Kenneth Lyons, this English edition covers in-depth the works of Picasso in ceramics. 'Picasso, the most universal of artists, has worked in the most widely-varying techniques. Though his painting and his drawing - and by now even his sculpture - are as well known, there are some aspects, such as his ceramics, that demanded special attention. Georges Ramie, the expert potter who was Picasso's collaborator, was undoubtedly the most proper person to undertake this work. For it was necessary to have known all the different phases in Picasso's work in ceramics, to follow his evolution in this medium and to be able to view his ceramic output as a whole. This ceramic work in itself is as it were a summary of Picasso's great capacity of creation, as also of his profound understanding of the history of art, which at times served as his inspiration, to transgress that history and, at all events, to carry it to what we might call its ultimate consequences.'

Given its rich narrative, superb photography, and in-depth captions, this book is an invaluable reference for the connoisseur of artistic ceramics and an indispensable text for the student or admirer of Picasso. This book sells for as much as $125-300 on the secondary market.

FROM GOLD TO PORCELAIN – THE ART OF PORCELAIN AND FAIENCE by Ruth Berges, Thomas Yoseloff, NY, 1963 First Edition.

As far as possible and practical, the chapters of this book have been arranged chronologically, although each may be read independently of the others. Twenty-one chapters present twenty-one different subjects in the field of faience and porcelain. Two chapters cover Oriental porcelain wares from China and Japan. The second section of the book comprises the story of faience in five major European countries including German Meissen; French Sevres, Chantilly, Mennecy, Saint Cloud and others; Italy’s Capo di Monte, Buen Retiro, Naples and others; English Chelsea; the Thuringian porcelain factories of Volkstedt, Gotha, Wallendorf, Grossbreitenbach, and others. The third section focuses on the discovery and development of European porcelain, its prevailing styles, its peak of achievement, and its decline. The fourth section takes a close look at some of the artists – the porcelain modellers and painters – at their lives, their aims, and the characteristics of their art. Artists include Kandler, Lowenfinck, the Hannong family, Bustelli, Melchior, and the Hausmaler. The final chapters deal with specific subjects as expressed through the medium of porcelain. This is a scholarly text that belongs in the permanent library of the collector, dealer, or historian of antique pottery and porcelain wares.

Scarce Book Antique Pottery in Smithsonian POTTERY by Brenda Gilchrist, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Smithsonian Illustrated Library of Antiques, Washington, DC, 1981.

This early out-of-print book treats of the 'History of work in clay, beginning with the ancient Greeks and continuing through to the present. By following each new innovation in pottery technique and style, the reader is introduced to a vast craft tradition as practiced throughout the world…. This profusely illustrated story includes many of the most famous of all pottery works: clay figures from China’s famed T’ang Dynasty, the delicately glazed works of Emile Galle and the imaginative fantasies worked by the French master Bernard Palissy. Along the way the reader becomes acquainted with the most important pottery centers and workshops, including Urbino, Nevers and Delft in Europe; Bennington, Rookwood and Dedham in the United States; and such far-off places as Baghdad, Istanbul and Kyoto. Included in this broad sweep are numerous potters and personalities: Josiah Wedgwood, father of the still-active workshop that bears his name, Gertrud and Otto Natzler, Thomas Whieldon and the Raku potters of Japan.'

Descriptions of technical matters are included in this geographically divided study of important pottery. 'The usefulness of this volume is extended by a chapter on collecting, a glossary of special terms, a list of further reading, and a guide to public collections of pottery both in the United States and abroad.' Excellent photo plates, many in color, make this authoritative book also a visually appealing one which will be treasured as part of the reference library for many years to come.

Rare Book Antique Gold / Painted Porcelain Lavishly illustrated in color, this early out-of-print book provides a pictorial survey of antique gold decorated porcelain, glass, and enamelware objects of art.

ANTIQUE GOLD AND ENAMELWARE IN COLOR by Howard Ricketts, Doubleday & Co., Garden City, N.Y., 1971,

begins with a discussion of 'French snuff boxes and the impact of French fashion on the rest of Europe, together with scent bottles, patch boxes and other expensive portable accessories. Further chapters discuss English enamels from the Midlands and London, [as well as] Swiss Automata and allied objects of the early nineteenth century. Objects of vertu, like snuff taking itself, declined in the middle of the nineteenth century—goldsmiths and enamellers turned to the manufacture of larger objects and in this vein the mid-century goldsmiths of Paris as well as those in the "fin de siecle" in Vienna are discussed. The Limoges revivalists are given a chapter and the Russian contribution to this subject is examined concluding with a section devoted to Peter Carl Faberge, the greatest reviver of eighteenth century objects. The numerous illustrations, integrated with the text, show the development of these objects right up to the 1920’s.' Beautifully photographed, mostly in full color, this book will make a wonderful addition to the permanent reference library of collectors, dealers and curators of neo-classic styled decorative objects, embellished by goldsmiths and enamellers.

Scarce Book Antique European Porcelain 69 full-page color plates, identifying captions, and a rich narrative combine to make this an invaluable reference.

EUROPEAN PORCELAIN by Mina Bacci, Paul Hamlyn, NY,1966/1969.

This concise text 'traces the history of porcelain through all the major factories, showing how technical advances allied to supreme craftsmanship led in a very short time to perfection in this most delicate of arts. The art of making porcelain was a closely guarded secret in China for centuries while European potters tried to discover the technique. True porcelain is very hard and translucent, qualities which allow a skilled craftsman to fashion wares of infinite delicacy. Various attempts were made to imitate it, but it was not until the early 18th century that after years of research the first European porcelain was made at Meissen, near Dresden. During the next 50 years, factories were established throughout Europe, including Bow, Chelsea and Worcester. Porcelain became extremely popular, and an astonishing variety of wares were manufactured, starting naturally with plates, vases and household vessels of all sorts, and progressing through looking-glass frames, walking stick handles and door-knobs, and finally including such unlikely objects as birdcages, tobacco pipes and even whole fireplaces. The illustrations reflect the variety of objects and styles.' Whether a novice or advanced collector or dealer, one will find this an indispensable resource reference work.

Scarce Oversize Book Susie Cooper Art Pottery Beautifully illustrated in superb color and black-and-white, this scarce out-of-print book provides an in-depth pictorial survey of the art pottery of Susie Cooper.

SUSIE COOPER: AN ELEGANT AFFAIR, by Bryn Youds, Thames and Hudson, Ltd., London, 1996.

This comprehensive text contains a biography of Susie Cooper and follows her work through various periods of her creative production. Appendices list patterns, show shapes, illustrate back stamps and provide a glossary which includes Cooper’s key decorative techniques. Although Susie Cooper passed away before this book found completion, she 'dearly hoped that it would show people how her work had evolved but, above all, that it would inspire students of design to experiment and to follow their personal ambitions.' The result appears to hold great promise of achieving those goals. Here is an essential volume for collectors of Susie Cooper ceramics or British art pottery in general.
