Rare Book Antique Portuguese Palissy Ceramics 'The great French sixteenth-century potter, Bernard Palissy, created a genre of rustic ceramic ware reproducing three-dimensional still lifes of natural objects, flora and fauna of all types, including small animals, reptiles, fish, and shells rendered in high relief and natural colors. His work influenced a school of artists that flourished in the Portuguese town of Caldas da Rainha, sixty five miles north of Lisbon, operating in at least twenty-five factories between 1853 and 1920. Here developed a particular style and color palette, as well as the ‘moss’ background only found in ceramics from this area.'

PORTUGUESE PALISSY WARE – A Survey of Cermaics from Caldas da Rainha, 1853-1920 by Marshall Katz, Hudson Hills Press, NY, 1999.

Lavishly illustrated with 159 color photographs, 'this volume surveys the work of the most important artists of the Portuguese Palissy revival, focusing on the two major figures, Namuel Cipriano Gomes Mafra and Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, but also covering other important ceramists, including Jose Alves Cunha, Jose Francisco de Sousa, and Manuel Gustavo Bordalo Pinheiro. By the way of context, it provides background histories of both Portugal and Calda da Rainha.' This is an indispensable book for the collector, dealer, or historian of antique majolica pottery wares.

Delftware Antique Ceramic Tiles / Book 195 Color Photos 195 full-color illustrations with in-depth captions supplement a rich narrative in this comprehensive pictorial text on antique Delftware tiles.

DELFTWARE TILES by Hans van Lemmen, The Overlook Press, Woodstock, NY, 1997.

In this volume, we find 'the definitive visual history of Holland’s signature form of decorative art. The mania for the blue and white ceramic tiles has never been stronger among designers, collectors and other fans of delft. This stunning visual history details the three-hundred year history of delft tiles and presents in full color nearly two hundred examples of the most outstanding delftware ever produced, from the classic blue and white tiles, with their figures and landscapes to multi-colored fruit and flowers, religious and mythological scenes, and elaborate patterns covering entire walls in historic homes and palaces throughout the world. The Dutch vogue for tiles in the seventeenth century as objects of utility and decoration was fueled by an expanding middle class who saw the tiles as an emblem of class status. From Holland, the craze spread, as royalty and the upper classes from around the world used the tiles for decoration, including wealthy Americans, who decorated fireplace mantles with tiles in such stately homes as the Van Cortlandt manor in upstate New York and the Governor’s palace in Williamsburg, Virginia. Covering every aspect of the history, creation, themes, and collecting of delftware tiles, this beautiful book will be a source of reference and delight for designers, historians, ceramists, collectors and all lovers of tiles.'
