Scarce Illustrated Book Antique Porcelain Smithsonian Drawing mainly on the superb collection at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, this is a book presents a stunning collection of antique

PORCELAIN. By Jerry E. Patterson, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, 1979.

This book is part of a series on antiques and design created for the Cooper-Hewitt Museum which is Smithsonian’s National Museum of Design. In an entertaining, clear fashion, this volume 'studies the technical, social and stylistic development of porcelain from its beginnings under the T’ang dynasty in ancient China to its golden age in Europe and America. Along the way we marvel at the Ming and Ch’ing porcelains and learn how Augustus the Strong, obsessed with the beauty of Oriental porcelain, patronized the production of the first true European porcelain in eighteenth-century Germany. The book then follows the spreading popularity of porcelain across Europe to England and to America, ending with modern movements in porcelain that include the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles…. The author opens his text with a detailed discussion of the technical processes of making hard-paste and soft-paste porcelain as well as bone china. The major factories and known modelers and designers are identified in this sweeping, often exciting story of the art of porcelain making—the temperamental German porcelain masters are described as constantly storming off from one employer to another…. A chapter on collecting, a glossary of special terms, a list of further reading and guide to public collections of porcelain, where priceless pieces can be seen, extend the usefulness of this concise work.'

Antique Pot Lids Underglaze Prints on Pottery Rare Book THE PRICE GUIDE TO POT-LIDS AND OTHER UNDERGLAZE COLOUR PRINTS ON POTTERY by A. Ball, The Antique Collector’s Club, Suffolk, 1970.

This rare out-of-print book is the most complete work available on the subject of pot lids – lids which were put on top of pots. These lids were often decorated with a picture descriptive of the contents of that pot.

'It is generally accepted that the firm of F. & R. Pratt & Co. of Fenton in Staffordshire were primarily responsible for the production of pot-lids as we know them today. Whether this is true or not is still in doubt, because there is certain information available which shows that other manufacturers were also in production contemporary with Pratt’s, not the least of which were Mayer & Co., of Burstem and the Cauldon Pottery Co. of Shelton.' This book covers approximately 600 different covers – their name, maker and date when known, and price information (in British pounds at date of publication). This book is a collector’s item in itself and an invaluable reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of decorated ceramics.

Investing Antique Pottery Porcelain / Scarce Book Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white, this early out-of-print book is a definitive guide to

INVESTING IN POTTERY & PORCELAIN. By Hugo Morley-Fletcher, Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., N.Y., 1968.

This book 'has been conceived to provide the private collector for the first time with a book that deals specifically with antiques as investments.' Written by an expert in the field, the author discusses English pottery and porcelain objects that 'chosen with care and knowledge, have proved to be first-class investments, appreciating spectacularly in value in a world characterized by the cyclic inflation and devaluation of more traditional types of currency.' Chapters are arranged by region and manufactories, including Staffordshire, Wedgwood, Leeds, Chelsea, Bow, Blue and White Porcelain, Worcester, Derby, Longton Hall, Plymouth & Bristol. Attention is also given to delftware, to the work of James Giles specifically, and to later factories. The concluding chapter summarizes the advice on pottery and porcelain as an investment. This book goes beyond the usual identification guide to provide the collector with policies that will lead to knowledgeable and profitable decisions as collections are being formed.

Early American Folk Pottery Stoneware / Scarce Book This early out-of-print book is a collector’s item in itself. Approximately 500 color and black-and-white photographs with in-depth captions accompany an extremely rich narrative which reviews the history and production of early American pottery and stoneware.

EARLY AMERICAN FOLK POTTERY by Harold F. Guilland, Chilton Book Co., NY, 1971.

'Here are the utensils our forebears used – the pots, plates, jars, beakers, pitchers, bowls, crocks – and the information on how they were made and designed. [The author’s] detailed descriptions of the pottery – size, color, design, where made – and the excellent photographs make this the most valuable and comprehensive book that treats of the Colonial earthenware and stoneware tradition, American design and methods and changes from the use of earthenware in 1640 to the time of stoneware, 1700-1880, when the customs and the ensuing needs of American life altered and even the manners and mores of the time reflected in the pottery. Valuable information about techniques and processes are enlarged with examples of how the ordinary adjuncts of everyday life fit into the picture. The decoration of a plate or keg often told a story, such as the decoration on a keg which symbolized the high quality of Holland gin which had the ‘bite’ of a swordfish or the ‘sting’ of a swarm of angry bees!' The profuse illustrations, in-depth captions, and rich narrative combine to make this rare book a leading reference on the subject of antique American pottery and stoneware.

Rare In-Depth Book Antique Pottery Porcelain Types Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white, this early out-of-print book is a definitive guide to the identification of makers, marks, and types of antique pottery and porcelain.

COLLECTIBLE CERAMICS by Marcia Ray, Crown Publishers, NY, 1974.

Prepared for the American collector, this handy Encyclopedia of more than 350 kinds of ceramics is a concise handbook of the most accurate data currently available. Covered here are 18th century wares, which are most often found in museums; wares of early and late 19th century, generously available in antiques shops; some early 20th century wares, now coming on the antiques market; and a few present-day wares, which are being collected for the future. Ceramics familiar to the beginning collector Wedgwood, Leeds, Royal Copenhagen, Meissen and other favorites are here, but even fuller information is given about many lesser-knowns such as R.S. Prussia, Sleepy-Eye give-aways, McCoy, Roseville, Noritake, and others about which accurate information is hard to find. Most of the photographs were taken especially for this book. Excepting those of museum pieces, and a few from private collections, they purposely do not show unusual examples. Instead, they illustrate the kind of items to be seen today in antiques shops and shows. Topics are arranged alphabetically by maker or production company and presented with many color or black-and-white photos as well as black-and-white line drawings of marks. This book will be a welcome addition to the reference library of any collector, dealer, or historian of antique pottery and porcelain.

Rare Book American Antique Pottery / Stoneware Lavishly illustrated in color, this early out-of-print book is a pictorial guide to the different types and many makers of American pottery and stoneware. 'For collectors of all types of American pottery, [stoneware], and porcelain made from the 18th century to the present. Color photographs and full descriptions of 367 representative pieces, along with collecting tips, a price guide [1982], and much more.'

THE KNOPF COLLECTORS’ GUIDES TO AMERICAN ANTIQUES: POTTERY & PORCELAIN by William C. Ketchum, Jr. Alfred A. Knopf, NY, 1983.

'From the earliest rough vessels of the mid-18th century to the Fiestaware of the mid-20th, here is American pottery and porcelain in all its variety and beauty—pictured, discussed, appraised, and categorized specifically for the collector. In all, 367 representative examples of every major type - wheel-thrown, molded, and modeled - are shown in brilliant full-color photographs along with information on origin and date, manufacturer, relationship to similar pieces, rarity, and hints for collectors. The range is from the relatively common to the rare, with an emphasis on types and styles available to the average collector. A special visual key makes it possible to identify mystery pieces easily, while introductions and appendixes furnish even more of what collectors want and need to know—the history of ceramics in America, a catalogue of manufacturers, advice on where to look for choice pieces, a glossary, and an up-to-date price guide [1982].'

Book Antique British Pottery Porcelain Encyclopedia This rare out-of-print book provides a comprehensive survey of antique English pottery and porcelain and 'contains over six hundred and fifty plates—sixteen pages of them in full color—illustrating more than a thousand documentary specimens of marked British pottery and porcelain of the period from 1700-1900.'

AN ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BRITISH POTTERY AND PORCELAIN by Geoffrey A. Godden, Bonanza Books Inc., N.Y., 1966.

'The illustrations have been collected from a wide variety of sources—from local as well as national museums, from private collectors, and from antique dealers—and the majority of specimens have not previously been illustrated in any reference book. Indeed, many documentary examples illustrate the work of potters never before represented in a book. Although affording a companion volume to the author’s highly praised 'Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks' this handsome book is, nevertheless, self-contained. Its contents include a summary of British ceramic art, an outline of the development of the pottery industry and, in relevant sections, information on the major firms.'

'All illustrations are accompanied by basic information on manufacturers, wares, period, form of mark, etc. A comprehensive glossary is linked with the illustrations to enhance the reader’s appreciation of the various types of ceramic body and styles of decoration, and the bibliography provides an important guide to further detailed information. There is no doubt that this illustrated encyclopedia will prove absolutely invaluable to the beginner, the general collector, and the specialist alike.'
