Scarce Book Antique Staffordshire Pottery Figures Illustrated in black-and-white, this early out-of-print provides a concise history and background of

STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY FIGURES. By John Bedford, Walker & Co., NY, 1964.

This book starts by discussing the Staffordshire Primitives – those items made of early stoneware and earthenware. The book then discusses the early families, such as the Woods of Burslem, who developed many of the early techniques for manufacturing pottery figures, and John Walton of Burslem, Ralph Salt of Hanley, and others. A chapter discusses the royal family, and as one would expect in High Victorian England, the royal family forms the largest single group of the portrait figures. There is also a chapter on animals. Many of these figures were being reproduced until recently, often from the original moulds, and since some of them appear without modern marks to warn the embryo collector, it may be useful to have a few facts about the production. A concise chapter takes up this issue. Whether a novice or advanced collector, one will find this small text most informative.
