Antique French Porcelain Marks Sevres Etc / Scarce Book 'Apart from occasional monographs on specialized aspects of the subject, George Savage’s book is the first comprehensive work in its field since 1906.' Supplemented by 4 color and 214 black-and-white photographs and 215 porcelain marks, this early out-of-print book is an in-depth scholarly survey of

SEVENTEENTH AND EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FRENCH PORCELAIN. By George Savage, Barrie & Rockliff, London, 1960 First Edition.

This comprehensive study 'begins with a brief survey of the historical background, and throughout the text sets the factories and wares in their social background. The peerless standard set by the French made their products much sought-after and they became the target for fakers and forgers. The author gives a great deal of information that will fortify the collector against foolish mistakes. He lucidly explains styles, decorative motifs, the work of famous modellers and decorators and, of course, colors, gilding and chemical constituents of bodies.'

This text covers by chapter: A Survey of French Decorative Art in The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries; The Earliest French Porcelain; The Chantilly Factory; The Later Soft Porcelain Factories; Vincennes-Sevres; Hard Porcelain in France; The Factories of Alsace and Lorraine; The Later Paris Factories; Tournai and St. Armand-les-Eaux; Forgeries; Marks, Date Letters, Artists Marks; Bibliography; and Index. This invaluable book belongs in the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of European pottery and porcelain.

THE COLLECTOR’S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIMOGES PORCELAIN by Mary Frank Gaston, Collector Books, KY, 1980/1984.

'The name ‘Limoges’ was made famous in the United States by the Haviland Company which, with successive generations of firms, since the mid 1800’s, has exported huge amounts of porcelain table wares to the United States. But in spite of common beliefs, Haviland and Limoges are not synonymous. Since the beginning of hard paste porcelain production in Limoges, France in the late 1700’s, numerous companies have produced porcelain in a wide range of objects. Because all companies in the area had access to the same natural resources necessary to make porcelain, the quality of the various companies’ products is virtually indistinguishable. In addition to table wares, the decorative accessories and art objects made by the Limoges companies and exported to the United States from the mid 1800’s to the late 1920’s are much sought after by antiques enthusiasts.'

'A large and beautiful selection of Limoges pieces are found in antiques shops and exhibited at antiques shows across the country. This book is about those Limoges companies, other than Haviland, whose products are found on the current American antiques market. Approximately 100 companies and 200 marks are identified. The 477 color plates showing over 700 pieces provide representative examples of this beautiful porcelain. The pieces shown with their prices are obtained from dealers throughout the country and actually reflect the variety of objects currently available on the American antiques market. A section on dinner ware patters will introduce the reader to a wide range of patterns which are published for the first time for Limoges companies. This book on Limoges Porcelain is the most comprehensive and authoritative work on the subject. It is now possible for dealers, avid collectors, and beginning collectors to find in a single source nearly all they ever wanted to know about Limoges Porcelain.'

HAVILAND: COLLECTIBLES & OBJECTS OF ART by Mary Frank Gaston, Collector Books, KY, 1984.

From the prolific and authoritative author of many books on pottery and porcelain comes this study of Haviland. 'The name ‘Haviland’ is well known among antique dealers and collectors for the beautiful porcelain the company manufactured in Limoges, France, and exported to the United States during the latter nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Until recently, interest has been focused primarily on pattern identification and pattern matching, for literally thousands of different patterns were made. Today, collectors are looking at Haviland in a different light and finding that Haviland china, regardlessof pattern, is highly collectible as an example of fine quality, richly decorated Victorian porcelain, available in an array of items including art pottery and stoneware, exhibition pieces, advertising china, unusual decorative accessories, and elaborate tableware. This book emphasizes the collectible nature of Haviland. A complete and concise history of the companies and their marks, and a price range for each item featured are presented. This book, all in color, is unique in its concept and a must of collectors, dealers and appraisers.'
