A Creed for the 3rd Millennium
by Colleen Mc Cullough, dust jacket, very good condition. This book was set in the not-so-distant future when it was written in the mid-80s. A new millennium was starting, and a new Ice Age was off to a rousing start to make it clear that this millennium (the "third" millennium mentioned in the title) wouldn't be nearly so cozy as the last one. The U.S. Government (among others) couldn't find a way to reverse the effects of the Ice Age. The United States is the most religious country in the developed world, as a result of the worsening ice age and the radical expansion of the government (which is more or less wholly responsible for keeping everyone in the northern states alive through each winter), in 2030 Americans have abandoned religion, perhaps out of the suspicion that God has abandoned them. This is what brings about "Operation Messiah" in the first place -- the government takes the position familiar to some socially conservative intellectuals that whether true or not, religion is a social necessity.
