Kastorpe is diagnosed with a light form of tuberculosis and has to spend over a year on mountain top in a health resort. The experience radically changes him. He turns into a thoughtful young man, studying sciences he never thought of studying before, thinking about life, philosophy and politics, arguing with his two highly educated friends, and wondering whether he will ever come back to the plain. It is a story about love unfulfilled, relation of death and sickness and about the general human condition.

Thankful Barnes, a Cape Cod widow inherits a home in the country which she turns into a boarding house. Its quaint quarters and pretty setting soon have it filled with boarders from the city. Then things begin to happen and it is discovered the house is haunted. Lots of fun, a roaring comedy of Cape Cod.
