1/8 CENT STAMP 1898-COMMEMORATIVE VICTORY SANTIAGO
Here is a wonderful COMMEMORATIVE COLLECTIVE DEPICTING VITORY AT SANTIAGO.
IT DISPLAYS BATTLING SHIPS AT SANTIAGO HARBOR. AN 1/8 (ONE EIGHTH CENT) STAMP FROM 1898. AS A COMMEMORATIVE ISSUED 1986 BY FLEETWOOD, CHEYENNE, WYOMING, U.S.A. PREM. 26B.
VICTORY AT SANTIAGO PRESENTATION CARD The mist enveloping Santiago Harbor had just burned away on the morning of Sunday, 3 July 1898. Only church services and the reading of the Articles of War broke the routine for the American Blockage Fleet. But at 0931, the flash and thunder of Spanish guns ruptured the morning calm. The American Fleet sounded General Quarters. In a desperate attempt to break the blockade, Spanish Admiral Cervera ordered his three armored cruisers and two destroyers to dash toward freedom. The American battleships U.S.S. Texas, Brooklyn, and Iowa, hotly pursued the Spanish. U.S.S. Texas " with cascades of water pouring away from her bow and guns firing, " charged directly at the Spaniards first. Farther east, the U.S.S. Orgegon, and Indiana cut off the enemy fleet from escape. Trapped and unable to match the superior American firepower, the Spanish fleet crumbled. The Spanish flagship Infanta Maria Teresa, her decks aflame, ran aground: the Oquendo " rolled and staggered like a drunkard. " The fight took only three hours. One American was killed and another seriously wounded, while the Spanish ships " were like slaughtering pens " with over three hundred dead and 151 wounded. The American victory assured the end of Spain's three-century grasp on the Caribbean.
