Winold Reiss, 1886-1953, was a German born, American painter.
Reiss came to the west in 1919 to paint American Indians, bringing with him the techniques of line and color acquired in Europe. He specialized in painting the Blackfeet Indians of Northern Montana, of which this is an example.
WINOLD REISS (pronounced Vee-nold Rice), a German-born artist whose paintings of the Blackfeet Indians were the basis of so much of Great Northern Railway's advertising from the 1920's to the 1960's. His colorful and accurate images of the Blackfeet tribes are a poignant reminder of America's history in the old west. Mr. Reiss was the first painter who saw the Indian abstractly as subject for art, who recognized classic monumentality in the manner in which he folded his blanket about him and in the proud carriage of his head. His pictures have helped to restore and give reality to the legend of the noble red man and have made him an epic figure among the lost and vanishing races of mankind. He has been able to achieve this quality of universality without sacrificing his realistic approach. Mr. Reiss believes that the epic of the American Indian should be preserved in murals for future generations on the walls of our public buildings and schools. Mr. Reiss died on August 29, 1953.
