| This happy vintage Hotei figure is carved green hardstone (it may be aventurine or jade) and wears a sun-shading brass hat with prong-set faux ruby. Hotei, often confused with Buddha, is actually one of the seven Japanese Shinto gods of good luck. Sometimes called Laughing Buddha, Hotei is the god of happiness, laughter, and the wisdom of contentment. (In Chinese Buddhism he is known as Budai, the Loving or Friendly One and is considered Bodhisattva Maitreya in disguise.) This busy deity is also the patron of the weak, children, bartenders, and fortune tellers! Smiling with his eyes closed, Hotei is 1" high and hangs from a 18 ˝" long curb link brass chain with safety clasp. Likely dating to the 1930’s or 1940’s, this chubby, cheery Hotei is in great condition and offers good luck and prosperity to the wearer. |
