This circa 1950 Jules Brenner sterling Modernist pendant was acquired directly from the original owner who purchased it in Jules’s own store in shortly after she was married. The teardrop pendant is 1 3/8" long and ¾" wide. The central drop has the form of a true 3-D teardrop. I believe the stone is quartz tiger’s eye; .the chatoyancy is obvious as is the blend of colors including butter yellow and veins of black and red. It is suspended from a rigid wire which hangs over the black, intentionally oxidized background of the galleried pendant. "Jules Brenner, Sterling" is stamped on the back of the pendant. The original is a 16" sterling curb-link with spring-ring clasp (stamped "Sterling’). The pendant is in wonderful condition.
Brenner originally set up shop in New York City around 1950 in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of near other artists such as Art Smith, Francisco Rebajes, Bill Tendler, and Sam Kramer, and Paul Lobel. The Whitney Museum of Modern Art was very nearby and brought in supportive patrons and fellow modernist experimenters in all forms of media. Once established in NYC, Brenner operated a Provincetown shop, as did Ed Wiener and Henry Steig, during the summer months.
