I am drawn to anything multicolored so I was immediately taken with this circa 1920 gilt Chinese dress clip in the form of a cluster of grapes. Each grape is an individually bezel-set, cabochon-cut gemstone. The varieties include coral, turquoise, rose quartz (center), aventurine, amethyst, carnelian, lapis lazuli or sodalite, and jade. The cluster with stem is 1 5/8" high and the clip mechanism is 1 1/8" long, tightly hinged, and has little teeth on the bottom edge only for a firm grip. It is signed "China" on the underside.
A very attractive ornament as a brooch clip, this semiprecious gemstone fruit is also perfect in size, color and style to wear over a strand of pearls, beads, or on a chain or cord. This hand-crafted Deco era novelty is in wonderful condition. When new, all things Asian were mysterious in the US and imported jewelry was not found in the typical downtown emporium. Lucky this beauty with its fine craftsmanship was lovingly preserved for us to enjoy! |
