This circa 1920 hand-worked petit point evening purse has an elaborate display of flowers on each side against a black background surmounted with a blue bow. The threads have muted shades and all stitches are tight with no visible wear. As a needle-worker, I know this was a project that took scores of hours to complete and the quality of the work suggests an origin of France or Austria where such skills have long been prized.
The brass frame has a fancy stamped design and is enameled with a black band on one side. This same side has three rhinestone chatons just below the push clasp which is topped with a black glass high cabochon. The attached chain is about 10 ˝" long. The interior has a tan faille fabric in good condition with no holes and very faint water spot above the pocket. Petitpoint purses were never as numerous as those employing larger needlepoint stitches, even in the early 20th century, so this little bag is a lovely and completely functional vintage find.
