This circa 1865 Victorian rolled-gold or gold-filled double locket is surmounted by a hand-carved gemstone cameo depicting an ancient Roman warrior. The ornate locket measures 1 1/8" high, 7/8" wide, and 5/8" deep. The bail adds 5/8" to the height. The front has an Etruscan style border of tiny balls and wire-work scallops.

The central well is framed by a polished rose-gold frame within which sets a wire-work diamond-design centered by the bezel-set cameo. This cameo is very finely carved—I took a magnified view so you can appreciate the detail that is often not found in carvings ten times its size.
The locket has a "bloomed" finish: a soft, matte appearance that was popular in the period. The interior has two compartments with original picture frames and glasses! Each will hold a photo of 1" by 11/16". The colorful waffle paper inserts that came with the locket are included.
A later-period, gold-filled chain with two rope-twist strands, 17 ¼" in length, is included; it closes with a spring-ring clasp stamped 1/20 14K GF." The bail can accommodate a thicker chain up to 5mm diameter, strand of beads or pearls, or a ribbon (I particularly like the romance of that look).
This Civil War era locket is in wonderful condition and is certainly worthy of heirloom care. It possesses the quality and design of a fine jewelry piece and will garner many a compliment.
