This Victorian period sash pin or brooch has a simple Art Nouveau style with four flowers joined by leafy garlands within a modified oval frame which holds a very intensely colored topaz glass jewel.
The brooch measures 3 ¼" wide by 2 ¼" high. The faceted, molded glass jewel is 1 ¼" wide and held by prongs that are part of the stamped body. The color of the stone is rich and the glass is free of bubbles, scratches, and cracks.
The brooch has the C-clasp style closure on the pin, common before 1900. The finish on the front is a soft and lustrous silver plate and the back shows more of the natural oxidation of time. Such larger pieces were once worn on wide sashes at the waist and today are very suitable for jacket or coat collars, sweaters, hats, heavier cloth shirts, or even on ribbons as chokers for the truly fashion forward lady with a taste for styles of bygone days.
