This lovely late Showa era (ca 1970) hanging scroll is adorned with a painting of the Shoubu flower Known as the " Sweet Flag ". It is signed " Aoyama " and comes in its own box. The Sweet flag is an evergreen perennial herb of the arum family growing wild in colonies along the edges of ponds, marshes, and streams throughout Japan. The sword-shaped leaves are about 32 inches long. In ancient times this herb was known as ayame (iris). The shoubu is known for the pleasant smell of its rhizome and leaves.
