This is an ancient piece of jade dating from the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). This unusual jade carving is thought to once have been used as a ceremonial burial item. Judging by the shape and style of this piece , it was likely used as a decorative item for the dead, placed inside a tomb. It measures 8 incehes by 8 inches by 2 inches and is adorned with a phoenix and goat on the body as well as on the lid. A supernatural bird, the phoenix embodied the five virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity. As such, it harmed neither a single insect nor blade of grass. The Goat is the most mild-mannered sign in the Chinese zodiac. This translates to righteousness, sincerity and compassion. Truly a nice tribute for the deceased. It is in excellent condition for its age. There is normal calcification as a result of being buried for thousands of years. A chemical reaction results in calcium leaching into the jade giving it the characteristic gold colour. The natural jade green colour can be seen in several spots. Please check out the pictures, as they accurately represent the condition. Thank you for looking and feel free to use the "contact us" button if you have any questions.
