French Santon Sylvette Amy Lady in Chair Doll
French Santon Sylvette Amy Lady Knitting Doll seated in wooden chair. These Santon dolls have been made for hundreds of years, originally to replace Christmas creche figures. They are hand molded of pure clay, then decorated and dressed by local artists which means that no two are alike. This doll is dressed in a slip, dress, apron, shawl and bonnet while holding her knitting in her lap. Her bonnet is slightly askew and a section of the chair's back slat is missing, but the chair remains solid. Chair is marked Sylvette Amy. These Santon's are unique to the French, but the detail and character of the faces is also reminiscent of the Hakata dolls of Japan which depict everyday life and occupations of the area. Each has his own life-like personality.
