Vintage Pottery Salt Box with Wooden Cover. Ivory body with Blue Rooster and Hen transfer decal and hand painted wide brown accent bands. This heavy stoneware salt box is made to hang on the wall or sit on the counter. It has overall age related crackling of the clear glaze. There is what appears to be a slice off the top backside (see pics) which may be from manufacturer or use, I'm not sure. There is also a small area on the bottom brown color band with what look like tiny cuts into the clay and a very tiny glaze rub. It has an excess clay deposit on the inside bottom, some extra glazed over clay spots and a couple of darker specks under the glaze. It is unmarked, but on the bottom rim, someone has written XPL? and incised several numbers, apparently dates, but I cannot decipher them. While the defects sound substantial they actually add to the charm of this piece which is likely from the 1930s-1940s era, possibly older. Brush-McCoy, Hull and other companies made these salt boxes in the early part of the last century. Most did not survive and many reference books only show them on the catalog pages. |
