1925 signed Robert Tait McKenzie bronze placque
1933 high school 1 mile relay winners bronze placque awarded at the University of Pennsylvania Relay Carnival
13 1/2inch dia mahogany board holds 8inch dia bronze placque showing Ben Franklin seated with laurel branch holding hand of one of four naked boys, the last of which holds a baton behind his back.
The four figures were modeled from four celebrated Pennsylvania runners: Brown, Madeira, Orton, and Meredith, three of whom were Olympic champions.
initialed RMT conjoined, 1925, Robert Tait McKenzie, 1867-1938, Canadian, also has copyright symbol.
all in fine condition w/light rubs from age.
This relay carnival is still held each year and placques like this were awarded to 1 high school winning team from Phila. each year. This was hung in the school to commemorate the victory.
The University of Pennsylvania’s historic Franklin Field, which hosted the Army-Navy Game 18 times between 1899 and 1935, is the site of one of the world's most storied track meets, the Penn Relay Carnival.

A late April tradition, the Penn Relay Carnival dates back 112 years, making it the world’s first and most recognized relay meet. The Relays are not only a rite of spring in the Philadelphia community, but also in the greater track and field world at large. Each year, the Penn Relays draw many of the nation’s — and the world’s — top track athletes to Franklin Field for one weekend of intense competition.
April 28, 2006 was the 112th meet

Click for more detail...
nouvbrz0001

pair of unsigned bronze fish style of P W Bartlett The unsigned bronze Art Nouveau placques depicting terrifying gargoyle like fish were surely influenced by the 1895 Paul W Bartlett fish displayed at the first Salon of Art Nouveau and reproduced in the American Magazine of Art (Nov 1925) #303. Sculpture currently held in Musee d'Orsay, Paris.
The dark chocolate patina is in perfect condition as is the rest of the piece save for the 2 1/4 dia holes drilled in each to facilitate mounting on a pair of doors in Saigon, Vietnam where these fabulous sculptures were discovered during the Vietnam Conflict. They were brought back and were in a Midwestern Antiques dealer's collection until his death.
These Art Nouveau placques were produced about 1895 in France and were meant to be displayed on the side of a building. Threaded holes are still intact on the reverse side. Some sculpturer was surely influenced by the bronze fish displayed at the 1st Salon of Art Nouveau in Paris 1896.
After many decades of hiding in plain site in Saigon and decades more in a midwest collection, we are proud to offer this pair of outstanding placques for your collection.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item mos001: Cesare Roccheggiani signed micromosaic frame
Click for more detail...
mos001

Cesare Roccheggiani signed micromosaic frame oval gilt brass folding picture frame with micromosaic panel on outside, opening to reveal picture holding area and purple/gold panel with mark of Cesare Roccheggiani, Rome

This may have been attached to a miniature easel at one time by the pin protruding on rear.

Work by Cesare Roccheggiani, Rome was listed in inventory shown at the USA Centennial Exhibit in Fairmont Park, Phila. 1876.

Mosaics were popular with travelers for more than a century. There was, to be sure, some criticism of the fashion. Goethe, for one, was appalled that an ancient art had been ’degraded’ to ornamenting trinkets ’Our times are worse than we think,’ he said. But not every visitor was so disparaging – quite the contrary, in fact. In 1810, when Rome was under French occupation, there were 20 private workshops. In the 1830s, a guidebook listed close to 30, many of them near the Spanish Steps.
Most mosaics were portable souvenirs that could be packed in a traveler''s trunk.

Cesare Roccheggiani is presumably the member of the family of mosaicists whose name is recorded in the lid of the case (see Petochi 1981, p. 69), since he is the only member with the initial 'C'. The only published document referring to Cesare is dated 1859, when he is mentioned in a bill of payment in the archives of the Vatican Mosaic Factory at St Peter's. He was probably related to Lorenzo and Nicola Roccheggiani, mosaicists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and Antonio Roccheggiani, who gained medals at the London exhibition of 1851 and the Paris exhibition of 1855. According to the Artistical Directory, Rome, 1856, Antonio's shop was at 7 Piazza di Spagna. The 1874 Guida Monaci lists C. Roccheggiani at 14-15 via Condotti, whereas Murray's Handbook to Rome of 1875 lists Roccheggiani with no initial under 'Mosaicists' as at 14 via Condotti. In the 1888 edition 'Roccheggiani' is described as selling also 'gold ornaments from antique patterns', while the Guida Commerciale di Roma of 1900 shows that the Roccheggiani premises had expanded to nos 12-15 via Condotti.

These small mosaics were sold to foreigners visiting Rome; hence the popularity of tourist motifs. Scenes of ancient ruins were especially popular. A view of the Colosseum, which was made by Cesare Roccheggiani during the second half of the 19th century, is representative of this taste. So precise is the mosaic that is possible to look through the arcades to the see the interior of the Colosseum. By using thousands of tesserae, Rocceggiani also shows the uneven cobblestone road and shadowy foreground. The mosaic plaque measures 11in in diameter; the final bid last winter was $17,455.

Folk Art wood carving by 13 yr old of bum signed This wood carving of a sleeping Hobo is signed in ink underneath, Angelo Capavabano, age 13, 1238 W 11 St, Erie, PA. The carver shows skills in carving way beyond his age as he captures the subtle nuances of wrinkled and tattered material in wood along with the cordury patches and rumpled hat, all captured in an impressionistist style. He even got the single thread repair of the tear on the leg of the pants. Finally he tops it all off with the use of just the right amount of color to capture the essence of the man. You can almost hear him snoring!
