Bontems 2 bird autotomaton in hammered brass cage 1870 Very large and heavy hammered brass cage containing a 2 bird automaton which when wound activates 2 articulated singing birds. Made so realistically that they even added the loose feathers and gravel to bottom of cage as would be found in a real bird cage.
No makers marks on inside or outside, but we have attributed to Bontems, Paris.

This is a high quality singing bird automata by Bontems. The birds are naturalistically feathered and in original untouched condition. They perched on the perch and on the floor.

The mechanism is operated by means of a lever. . When it is pushed to the left the bird sings whilst opening and closing its beak, moving its head from side-to-side and raising and lowering its tail continuously. The clockwork movement is wound by a key inserted in a hole in the side.

The hammered brass in an egg shape cage is quite rare and many others have never seen this form.


Note: Blaise Bontems was renowned for his mastery, both in the authenticity of his bird song and for his mechanical skill. His superb pieces were much admired when they were displayed in the 1878 Exhibition. Blaise Bontems – Born 1814 Died 1881 in France

German Speaking Picture Book circa 1890 contains 8 colored lithograph pictures and descriptions of several birds & animals, with corresponding pull string that operates a squeek mechanism that replicates the noise each animal makes, all work, 3 inch tear on edge of binding, otherwise very fine condition. some strings replaced. A fabulous survivor as this is quite fragile in a chids hands.
