kkk001
Ku Klux Klan Pennsylvania 1928 bronze token This coin has the legend {Knights of Ku Klux Klan Realm of Pennsylvania} on the obverse and {Pennsylvania 1928 I Was There} on the reverse side of this token. Note this is an especially sharp die stuck coin with a very clearly readable Whitehead & Hoag raised maker mark along the edge on the back.
It is bronze, measuring 32mm in diameter.
The condition is very fine, with sharp detail.
This is identified as the "1928 Pennsylvania" token, numbered KK-229 in the exonumia reference, Ku Klux Klan TOKENS Exonumia Catalog and Price Guide by D. E. Birdsell Reference Book.

The item on this page is an historical collectible item and is not to be construed as advocating nor supporting the positions of the organization represented. It is being offered and sold for the historical content only and is not intended for any use other than appropriate display.

Whitehead & Hoag are best known as manufacturers of celluloid pins and advertising but they also did bronze casting in the 20's. The following information was found indicating how involved they were yet little information has survived about their endevours.

The Lincoln Highway bronze medallions for the concrete markers were manufactured by the Whitehead & Hoag Company of Newark, NJ. There are no known records of how the markers and medallions were designed, manufactured or the logistics of delivery around the country. The project was referenced in the minutes of the Lincoln Highway Association Directors meeting in late 1927. This was supposed to be a final and permanent marking of the Lincoln Highway, with the participation of the Boy Scouts. Markers were delivered around the country to be installed by the Boy Scouts on September 1, 1928. Some markers were saved for future road improvements, and/or erected later. Spares to replace damaged ones were also thought to be available. The original Lincoln Highway Association's archives, as donated to the Transportation Section of the Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan, contain a type written log of placement locations for 2,440 concrete markers and thousands of porcelain signs for this effort. Besides the Directors' minutes and this log there are no other official records regarding the markers except for a blueprint of a very rough sketch of the top of a marker. The markers were rumored to have been manufactured by a concrete manufacturer in Detroit. The National Boy Scouts Archives were similarly bereft of any details of this magnificent project.
