ARTIST PETER MAX (Born: 1937)

German born American artist, Peter Max is best known for his fantastically colorful images and exciting exuberant style. Pop artist Max, like his contemporary Andy Warhol, had created his own artistic force with iconic figures and has captured the faces of the Statue of Liberty, the Mona Lisa, Mick Jagger and George Washington in his one of a king Technicolor style. This acclaimed artist’s work is also held in prestigious museum collections around the world.

Born in Berlin, Peter lived in China, as a child and traveled to India, the continent of Africa, and Israel and Paris, until his family moved to the U.S. Trained at the Art Students League, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts in New York. When he left art school in the 1960s he began producing, "cosmic imagery" that catapulted him to prominence and garnered him the cover story in Life magazine.

Max is noted for his surging graphic designs in bright, vibrating colors periodically influenced by commercial arts and reminiscent of art nouveau while incorporating psychedelic colors in floral and celestial motifs. Max is as passionate, creative and prolific artist who has worked with acrylics, oils, water colors, pastels, charcoal, etchings, engravings, lithographs, serigraphs, silk screens, sculpture and computer graphics. Max's Cosmic '60s art, with its transcendental Pop imagery captured the imagination of an entire generation and catapulted the young artist to fame and fortune.
Max is a painter for four former U.S. Presidents Carter, Ford, Bush and Reagan and created posters for Bill Clinton's inauguration. He was later invited to the White House to paint the signing of the Peace Accord.

Max has had approximately forty International museum shows, and more than fifty gallery shows worldwide. His works appear in the prominent collections of many major museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Premier art institutions regularly exhibit his solo and his trademark posters have achieved international fame.

Kondakova's book, a beautifully presented huge volume, includes an essay by Professor Sam Hunter, Emeritus Professor of Art History at Princeton University and former Curator of Modern Art at the University Art Museum. Of her work, he writes; "At times almost any visual tour-de-force seems possible in Kondakova's repertory of images. They seem to reflect an impossibly wonderful but still quite concrete and visible, parallel universe. The sense of time, in the modern sense, is less important than atmosphere and emotion, which colors everything she shows in such disarming, if diligently observed detail. One is persuaded that she is, in fact, rendering quite faithfully something actually before her, yet nothing is quite as it seems to other viewers, or even to the camera's lens." This amazing book is an absolute must have for those Kondakova art lovers and art collector!
