1885 - Baby Portrait – Oil on Wood
A baby/ young child portrait- signed and dated by artist. Hard to read, but looks to be: Jos. M. Kuriger artist – Dayton ( Oh) – 1885- The wood is shaped like a plate, and is light weight wood, that has been oil painted. Child looks a little stressed, perhaps was not happy to be posing so long for this work to be finished. The hands seem large, common in that era. I tried to find an artist in Dayton in the 1880 census by this name, but was not successful. I did find a Josephine, and wondered perhaps if the Jos. Could be for Josephine? No way to know for sure. Often artists traveled, so perhaps didn’t even live in Dayton 5 years earlier. Photo is slightly warped from age, and measures 9 ¼ inches across. Just wonderful!
Manufacturer: Jos. M. Kuriger, artist Dayton, Ohio
