Even though we love them, skirts have undergone the most brutal changes of any one piece of clothing in history. We've done everything possible to make them interesting:

Hemlines have gone up and down and to the middle; we've pleated and gathered, tucked and laced, ruffled and fringed, scalloped and scarfed them; we've added buttons and sequins, pockets and safety pins; we've made them big and small, restrictive and free, fancy and plain. We've used hankies and blankets, scarves and tablecloths, or made them out of cotton, wool, lace, fur, paper, leather, credit cards, saran wrap, and even duct tape!

But they are still with us and the love affair goes on.
