Condition: Excellent & Wearable
Size: S/M
Type: Cotton Plaid Day Dress/Suit
Manufacturer: Handmade
The style of this 2 piece "dress"/suit is of the late Edwardian period or perhaps very early 1920s,and the overdress design is unusual-- could it have started out life as a maternity dress?

The unique design of this 2-piece outfit is so interesting and inventive.

Someone certainly knew how to make fabric go a very long way! The flare in the skirt has a triangle of fabric added to the width of the fabric to make the flare; the sleeve has a strip of fabric added for the fullness; the elbow cuff strip of fabric adds length to the sleeve, as does the flounce at the end. Even the bodice is made in small pieces--wide fabric width bias strips at the front and back, and separate ones for the side and collar. Ingenious!

The underskirt has a lightweight muslin top (which may have been added later, especially if it was originally a maternity outfit). The blouse has a front piece, cut on the bias, which leaves lots of room for that baby?--or just for comfort! The pointed scarf-like edge foretells of the twenties scarf-edge designs.

The fabric is a very lightweight cotton plaid voile, trimmed with a light blue solid cotton batiste. Even though lightweight, the fabrics are very strong indeed, especially to have lasted so long without weak places or tears. I don't see any rips tears, holes, or stains on this outfit at all! There are a few discreet mends that do not at all detract from this dress. This outfit is in excellent condition.

The measurements are:

BLOUSE/TOP:

BUST:36-38"
WAIST: Full

TORSO:
Underarm to hem on side: 15 1/2"
Underarm to hem at front/back: 26"

SLEEVE Length: 17"
(This is a raglin sleeve, so measures are approximate for the sleeve).

SKIRT:
WAIST: 30" (could be made larger by replacing the muslin panel at the top)

HIPS: 42"

TORSO: Waist to hem: 34"

HEM: 2 " usable hem

This is a lovely little nostalgic piece of history. Don't you just love the ingenuity of our Edwardian sisters?
