Circa: 1960s Condition: Excellent Size: 10 Type: Pleated Skirt Manufacturer: Pendleton Pendleton is a name familiar to vintage clothing collectors. To make a long story short, Pendleton originally made textiles and blankets, then suits for men, and finally plaid woolen shirts for men. Unlike most wool shirts available at that time, these were brightly colored plaids. (After WWII Pendleton Mills began making woolen goods for women as well.

As luck would have it, it seems that there was an obscure singing group somewhere in America who liked the shirts and decided to name themselves "the Pendletons"--all wearing one of the bright colored plaids. The group changed their name later to "the Beach Boys" and suddenly Pendleton plaids were all the rage with young people in America.
This Pendleton skirt is probably from the 1960s. As with most of Pendleton plaid patterns, it is a tartan plaid in black and green with a slight hint of dark pink threads running through. The colors used in the wool, and the length of the skirt is consistent with early sixties, as is the plastic zipper on the side. This skirt is made of pure virgin wool, as is attested to by the original tag and boasts box pleats which were a staple of the sixties.
There is a size tag in the skirt as well that tells that the skirt is a Misses 10. Of course that is rather meaningless to us now--vintage sizing is usually quite different from today. So we will go by measurement:
Waist:28" Hips:38" Waist to hem:33"
This skirt would look smashing with a hand knitted (or hand knitted look) black or white sweater with a black beret--and would be perfect with green on St Pattys Day!
This is a lovely skirt, with fine workmanship as with all Pendleton goods. It is in MINT condition. You will not be disappointed in this purchase. Its value will increase with time. |
